Who in the NBA has a big man that they want to get rid of that would require Rice to pull the deal off. Hell for that matter what team in the NBA would want Rice?!
In 75 games last season, Rice averaged 12.0 points per game at 44%. 29.5 minutes per game. In 82 games last season, Anderson averaged 8.7 points per game at 45%. 29.2 minutes per game. Shandon has shown that he is more durable. Plays better D. Will not disrupt team chemistry. He will contribute just as much offensively for half the amount Rice makes. Oh yeah, and Shandon is almost 6 years younger than Rice. Rice better not be in pajamas next year unless we unload Cato too.
hey maybe rudy reads the bbs, and hes like man they really hate shandon....maybe i should show them how much worse it really could be.... ok ya i kno its not happenin, but wateva....they know wats best rite? glen wont be a rocket hopefully, and if he is, hes bait for sumthin else. they wouldnt screw us over like that.....
-If I were NY, I'd do ANYTHING to get rid of Rice's contract. He's the Cato of Manhattan. Why? The Knicks are so far over the cap that it doesn't matter whether they have Rice's contract or not. And I hardly think Rice the player makes a negative effect on them. P.S. I will not elaborate too much, cause I don't have the time to argue with everyone on the BBS, but adding Glen Rice for Shandon Anderson would be a great player personnel move. Shandon did not and will not fit in with this team. Did anyone notice last year how beautifully this offense flowed when Walt was stroking the open threes? Rice could do that almost every night... he's a much more consistent player, has a much more consistent shot, can create his own shot for himself, and isn't a horrible defender. He's not good by any stretch, but he's not Walt either. Look at it this way. The Rockets will be way over the cap come 2003, when Francis gets his max extension. Don't dream of Duncan, or other free agents then. Our only possible summer to have cap room is next summer, and if we just resigned Shandon, we'd have about 5 million in cap room. You get almost that much for the middle class exception that you would get for being over the cap. For once I wish you guys would look at things on the court this season, and not at a player's price tag. We may have 5 small forwards on the roster, but what have Langhi and Morris done so far? What has Walt done? Try and look at the team that's on the floor, and think about the best way to make that team as good as possible. I highly doubt the Rockets prioritize developing Langhi and Morris and saving a couple million more cap room in 2002 ahead of trying to win next season. At least, I hope they don't. The value we would have next season in free agency would be about 5 million, and we'll get that anyway from the exception. Glen Rice, imho, is a much better fit for this team than Shandon Anderson, and while his price tag is high, I'm happy to see that Les is willing to pay it to make this team better.
First of all.........DAMNIT!!! But after thinking about this, I have a good feeling. There is NO doubt in my mind that a thrid team is involved. Like almost everyone has said, there is no logical reason for the Rockets to trade for Fried Rice. I'm only for the deal if we unload Cato somehow, get a legitimate center, or something else that would improve the 2002 Rockets. I'm sick of waiting for the future...improve the Rockets now! I must sound like an idiot, but being a die-hard Rocket fan can change you lol. However, I have major faith in CD and Rudy, and therefore will not worry too much. Cod
I'm not a big fan of Cato, but who exactly would be our center if we unloaded him? If we unload Cato, we need to reload at the center position, do we not? Either way, Rice simply can't be IT. There has got to be something more to this, unless perhaps RT and CD got a hold of some bad fish at Paps. Vegetarians do eat fish, right?
I think some of you are overeacting just a tad. Rice can still play, he has yet to get legitimate PT since the contract and should have something to prove. If he can shoot and remain quick enough to fake and drive to the basket then he would be good in the zone defense. With zones individual defensive playing is not very important, its all about strong team defense. Rice lacks the rebounding we'd all like from the SF but he is better than Anderson. Rice may not even start, playing all the backup 2 and 3 should get him 30 minutes per. Rice is also the kind of guy that could get us past the 1st round, he is capable of going on tears that Mobley can only dream about at this point in his career. Is he worth the big contract? Hell no! But if the Rockets don't land anyone next year then whats the point of major cap room? They obviously feel they have no major prospects. If the team plays strong defense and Cato can at least change some shots then you might like Rice when you see how he fits. Rice is not the ideal Rocket but he could suprise you. I would much rather have kept Hakeem at a higher price though.
I thinking the same thing barbourdg is right... CD must have something going on here... I knew something was wrong since everyone was saying Anderson negotiations were going well. I'm sure they new all along they were going to have to deal Shandon somewhere for players... And just for Glenn Rice, it doesn't make sense unless there's a third team......
If Rice is part of a three way (please clutch pop on and tell us this is a possibility!) What big man might be available with a big salary that might require Rices contract to make it work? The only one that comes to mind is signing Shandon (about 6mill)and sending him plus the trade exception to New York for Rice. The only teams that have big men that might be available for that price would be Illguaskas in Clevelend or Big Country in Memphis. No way we want Reeves and Illguaskas is injury prone but what else makes since?
Cat, wouldn't re-signing Dream at 8 or 9 million a year made more since than Rice? Dream fills a position of need now and neither Dream or Rice would be around when we get back to the championship.
Is this possible????? Case 1 : s/t shandon anderson to ny for othello (maybe other player(s) involved also). case 2: s/t shandon anderson to ny for rice (maybe other player(s)) ; send rice and toronto first round pick (maybe another pick or player) for jahidi white. case 3: rice is coming to houston ; whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy????
i hope this is a three way with the bulls......Shandon going to NY for Othella or Kurt and Rice going to the Bulls with Oakley there he makes more sense. and then Cato and Brad Millier swap zip codes i really hope its something like that.
You are on the pipe. Got to get off man, rots your brain and your teeth. Any trade to get rid of Cato would be accepted. I would trade him for a port-a-potty. Or even a toilet seat.
Another thing guys is that I don't think Shandon would be the only player being traded... Maybe a Walt Williams.... or maybe others... Sorry... but unless you can bring in a big center... I think Cato has at least another year here in Houston... Something hopefully is going to happen other than a straight up sign and trade deal... CD is too smart to just add another SF... Reason being why get T-Mo if your just going to add another SF... There's not a answer... Guys I think we are just trying to rationalize too much, I know I am..........
Im going to have to agree with Barbourdog on this one. Given the fact that the Rockets are trying to stay young and build a solid nucleus, this deal makes no sense whatesoever, unless we are throwing him to a third team....now that would make sense to me. Also like it has been beaten to death before, why would we trade away our best defender, to get nothing more than a cap eating SF that will do nothing but shoot? We have enough shooters on this team IMO I guess like the theme has been all summer long: WE WILL HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE!!!!!! damn that sucks
Correction: Case #2 just seems do idiotic. I don't think the wizards are looking to take on huge contracts. othello is coming to houston and i don't even want to think about rice coming to houston. It just does not make sense to send shandon for rice.
I'm all for Shandon to Atlanta for Dermarr threads to get started back up. Hey Clutch, question: u said that u heard it was close to happening today and yesterday right, well did u hear of any 3 way that could happen? If no 3 way, could u at least explain from your source, y the Rocks would want Rice, I mean, he is afterall not a good fit for the team IMHO, and his age and contract don't seem to be attractive either.
Cat- Normally I agree with you. But, there's one difference, here. Fegan can't even "threaten" MCE. By taking on Rice, you forfeit your cap for the foreseeable future. We don't HAVE to take on Rice. We didn't take any $$ for Hakeem for this reason. If you S/T Rice for Anderson, you could just as easily spend that 8 mill on someone other than Rice, and tell Fegan/Anderson "we're not taking Rice. For that 8 mill Rice makes this year, you could easily sign Marc Jackson. How much do you think Jim Jackson, who would provide as much offense as Rice, would cost in comparison? You don't think some free agent, this year or next, could provide what Rice provides at 8 mill? Similar to the Hakeem situation, in that the question is: "Sure, he improves your team, but at what price?" I will add, however, that Rice would be going out at the same time Griffin will hopefully be coming into his own. We'll see what other pieces are involved. I doubt we'd just eat a 4 mill difference. Nugzfan, whenever he comes by- Is Travis Knight a true center?
