not trying to do the US versus China thing. i mentioned China because that's the only place that i have some knowledge. no idea about other places. just so you know, most people in China thinks US education system is the better system.

of course people don't look down on higher education. but when you are little kids in school, they don't think that way. when i was in elementary school, i certainly didn't think the nerds were the cool bunch. it certainly is a stereotype, but it is true to certain extend. bad education is not caused by inequality alone. i'm sure everyone knows it's a combination of poverty, culture, etc.

On the flip side of that, don't a lot of kids also get burnt out along the way? For the ones that do make it, do you ever get the sense that they feel they are entitled?

yes, a lot kids just get burnt out. but not everyone though. as for the ones that make it, i don't really get a sense that they feel entitled. i guess it differs from person to person. most people in China would LOVE to have the US education system that focuses on creativity. but due to a large population and limited schools, people have no choice but to study as hard as they can to get there. there are so many opportunities here, but people take them as granted and don't even care for education anymore.

anyways, back to the topic, i don't think paying kids to go to school is going to solve anything. do they get cash payment or as their college fund? if i get cash for going to school, i would end up spending all of it on games and such. but if it goes to college fund, i won't be as motivated.

I think that if a certain school is trying it's hardest to keep undisciplined kids behaved, then education takes a back seat. If you were to walk through the successful schools as well as the bad ones, you'd probably see the behavior difference. If the parents (if there are any), can't build the foundation, the rest is very difficult.
