Okay, so we have a lot of negativity around here, and rightfully so, based on the Horns' performance in the last 5 games. So, I'm going to break this down pragmatically: QB: Vince Young is the most dangerous QB this side of Matt Leinart, and arguably a threat to score at any given time. He is now 21-2 as a starter, and currently riding an 11 game winning streak. The previous notion that he couldn't pass has been dismissed with a breakout game at Ohio State. OU is breaking in a talented RS freshman in Rhett Bomar, who has a terrific arm and is mobile as well. He has had problems with turnovers, as he has only started 3 games thus far. He has NOT faced a defense of Texas' caliber, nor has he seen the disguised blitz packages that we will throw at him. ADVANTAGE: TEXAS O-Line Texas has bookend first round NFL talent at LT and RT in Justin Blaylock and Jonathan Scott. Both are seasoned vets and an absolute load. Will Allen, Lyle Sendlein, and Will Allen round out what might be the most talented offensive line in the NCAA. OU's D-line is depleted due to injury, which could spell trouble for the Sooners against this veteran unit led by Coach McWhorter. OU's O-line has been hit hard by attrition as starting LT Akim Millington quit the team just before the season opener. In years past this has been one of their biggest strengths. This year, they have a stud T in Davin Joseph, but the talent after him is terrible. Kevin Chiasson, Chris Bush, JD Quinn, and Chris Messner round out the rest of the line, which lacks both talent and experience. ADVANTAGE: TEXAS Running Back Texas uses a running back by committee approach which has worked very well thus far. Jamaal Charles looks like the next great one in a long line of talented Texas RB's that includes Ricky, Priest, and Cedric. Jamaal has great open field moves, is elusive, and has breakaway speed. Selvin Young will see some time, as will 6'3 275 lb dump truck Henry Melton. Adrian Peterson is arguably the top RB in the nation. There is some concern with a high ankle sprain that he re-aggravated against KSU. When healthy, Peterson has a rare blend of speed and power that uses to punish opposing defenders in between the tackles and outside as well. KeJuan Jones has had some big games against Texas in the past, and expect him to get plenty of touches, especially if AD's not 100%. JD Runnels is one of the best blocking FB's in the nation. ADVANTAGE: OKLAHOMA Tight End David Thomas was a 1st team preseason All Big 12 selection this year. He's got the best hands on the team, and is a great blocker as well. Vince often looks for him on rollout plays as he's very adept and knowing where the yard markers are and moving the chains. OU is thin here with some guy named Joe Jon Finley (I'm not making this up) and Bubba Moses. Neither is a threat like the Trent Smith's of years past. Texas' LBs like Kelson and Bobino should easily be able to cover these guys. ADVANTAGE: TEXAS Wide Receiver Limas Sweed, Billy Pittman, and Ramonce Taylor have stepped up this year and emerged as legitimate pass catching threats. RT can take it to the house anytime with his 4.3 speed and great open field elusiveness. Pittman had his coming out party at OSU and continues to impress UT coaches and fans. Limas Sweed is a big target who is the best blocker of the bunch. OU is still hurt by losing Mark Clayton, Mark Bradley, and Brandon Jones to the 2005 NFL draft. Travis Wilson and Jejuan Rankins return, but neither have been very impressive thus far. Paul Thompson has been moved to WR, but his lack of experience here is an issue. True freshmen Malcolm Kelly and Eric Huggins should get a few looks as well. Texas' secondary shouldn't have any problem shutting down this unit. ADVANTAGE: EVEN
I agree that Bob Stoops is an excellent and a more superior coach than Mack Brown. But Mack Brown's not a scrub and Greg Davis has undergone an improvement. If you go into the Shoe and beat the #4 team in the nation, your coaching staff is pretty damn good.
Y'all are missing the forest for the trees. The game of the week will be #13 Texas Tech vs. #26 Nebraska. Now there's an entertaining game. I mean, I know OU has done y'all wrong the past few years, but you're talking about #2 Texas vs. #41 Oklahoma. That really shouldn't even be a contest.
I found out yesterday that I have a gig in downtown Houston at 10AM on Saturday! WTF WTF WTF The good news is that I only have to play for an hour (10-11) and they promised me that I would have help loading up my car and getting the hell out of there, so I can go 80mph down 59 to get home in time for the kickoff.
bob stoops: 3 big XII championships, 3 national championship appearances, 1 national championship (undisputed.) mack brown: ZERO conference championships, let alone national championships. i'm assuming you were joking...
What was he joking about? Didn't TCU beat OU in Norman? Didn't UT beat tOSU in Columbus? I don't think he posted that to say that Brown is the better coach, but that he can certainly hold his own.
LOL - now that's selective memory. How about this: Bob Stoops: 5 straight wins versus UT. 1 National Championship Mack Brown: 0 National Championships, but takes care of his buddy Greg Davis
There is this rumour circulating that the OU team sucks so bad, that someone killed themselves over it. Is it true? That would be sad.
go to my myspace.cmo page and download OU-SUCKS. Then play it. Loudly. Often. http://www.myspace.com/apolloxviii
he was analyzing the coaching as per bigtexxx's post. i don't think comparing one half of one season is a fair comparison. in fact, i think it's a joke -- hence my comment. i am a life-long longhorn fan (University of Texas class of 1994) and it is clear to me that bob stoops is the better coach. Texas has the better team. OK has the better coach. period. we'll see on saturday which of those things is more vital to the success of either of these teams. i'm skeptical...
I agree with you. However, it's not like we have the worst coaching staff in the Big XII. You don't have 4 straight 10+ win seasons with a crappy coaching staff.
Your ******* right you don't. The wheels are starting to fall off the Sooners. They just haven't been the same since Mike Stoops left them to get b**** slapped by Kansas State in the 2003 Big 12 Championship. To add to that, Mike's replacement, Bo Pellini, left OU to work for Les Miles at LSU. Meanwhile, Texas brought in the best defensive mind in the nation in Gene Chizik from Auburn. The guy is a f'n mastermind, and will be a head coach very soon. Greg Davis has had an enlightenment this year, as he's really dusted off the playbook and called some phenomenal games.
and i agree with you. clearly, our coaching staff is superior to almost every coaching staff in the country. four straight 10+ win seasons is incredible. however, until Texas gets over the big three (OK, Big XII, National Championship) we don't have the best coaching staff in our own division of our own conference. that's all i'm sayin'. i want this win sooooooooo bad i can taste it. i'm going freakin' nuts! HELP!!!
