That's what I was talking about - the Touch. I assumed that FFB was complaining that he had to pay money to put some software on his girlfriend's touch. I speculated that he had a generation 1 Touch.
jailbreaking does not void your warranty unless you are stupid and bring your iPod into an Apple store that is jailbroken. If you have any problems you only need to restore your iPod. With jailbreak, you can also use themes and have google streetview in maps app
I don't know. I bought it directly from Apple, but I do believe it was 1st gen. Regardless, if Apple (and yes, I bought both the phone and the upgrade directly from Apple) is selling something, the upgrades should've been put on already. I bought it two months ago.
A quick way to check... Does it have a speaker - in other words, can you listen to it without headphones? If so, it's a generation 2. When you say Apple charged you $10 to install iTunes, was that to install it on the Touch or your computer? Either way, I have never heard of a charge for iTunes, only for the upgrade software for the original Generation 1s.
Well, I don't have it with me. I'm not sure about a speaker, it has something, obviously, because it makes noises when you unlock it, etc. As for the upgrade? Here is what happened: I plugged the thing into my computer and it prompted my iTunes to come up and synced all of the music into it automatically. (My computer has been bugging me to upgrade the iTunes for months but I've always ignored it, as I rarely use the thing.) Next, I found the download tab and downloaded some suggested apps. Then when I tried to sync them in, it wouldn't do it. After several failed attempts, I "upgraded" to version 2.2 to see if that would work. It said it cost $9.95, but was free for 2.0 versions. I had ZERO idea what version I had, so I just clicked "upgrade." Damn thing took 45 minutes to download, and then apps were available to transfer to the phone. I then looked at my "purchases" and sure enough, they charged me the $9.95. All of that was fine until my girl went to charge it. It didn't come with a wall charger, so she plugged it into her computer. She SWEARS up and down that that is all she did. But it synced her music into the phone from iTunes and erased everything I had put on there the previous night. Regardless, "Syncing" up a phone SHOULD NOT erase already existing stuff, period.
Apple is very clear that you cannot use the device on two computers (part of their deal with the record companies regarding itunes, IIRC). I own like four apple devices, and each PROMPTS before you sync on a new machine. After allowing the sync, it should NOT erase the apps - I agree with you in that regard.
OK, new problem: What should I do about wifi? I already signed up for T Mobile, but their coverage seems limited. What is the best option?
That is my biggest beef with ipod and itunes as well. I am thinking of buying an itouch because now it will be able to do e-books through amazon like a kindle. But that's the main thing keeping me from doing so. There are ways around it that I have found but they are a pain in the tushy.
BUMP Very interesting reading the responses in this thread. I am considering purchasing an iTouch myself. Question: Is the 8G model good for the basic music/pictures/applications or should I go for more memory?
fatty, i just bought an 8 gig refurb generation 1 iTouch on Apple's site. its been great. the wifi is good, lots of apps, good battery life too.
the apps kill the memory but 8 gigs are alright if you plan on DL alot, then get more memory man it is possible to lose all of your DL content when you plug back up to the computer if you arent careful. It pretty much re-initializes the playlist if you lose content from the computer though, you have to rebuy..sucks i know its a sweet device though, id recommend it to anyone
Thanks for the info. I'm pretty much clueless when it comes to electronics and anything technical. I have no concept of what "8G" even really means I just figured if i'm going to use the device to it's full potential (pictures, music, apps) I figured those would all add up and kill your memory. I'll probably go a step above then.
I am debating on getting one. this maybe an obvious question but. . . will I need a MAC to store/backup the APPS Rocket River
No, it runs on a PC just fine. 8 gigs is plenty for most people unless you want to store lots of videos.
I'm actually selling my itouch for 200. its the last generation. i barely used it. im in the austin area too.
Yep a Mac or PC is fine. I actually got an externall HDD so I can switch videos and songs whenever I pleased. Its addicting buying stuff off of itunes and the app store. So many apps and games that its ridiculous. Even got a movie saved to the ex HDD For the most part though if you love putting things on your phone then the 8 gig model won't last you long unless you do what im doing and pick and choose what you want to put on it during a particular time, mix and match. Its all up to you though, but I can see myself getting a 32 gig in the future.
If you have a GSM provider, getting the iTouch seems pretty stupid to me. Just spend the extra money and get the iPhone while you're at it.
this may sound dumb, but if i download a video.. can I just add it to itunes or does it have to be in some sort of format before i can transfer it?
If you are talking about downloading a video directly to your iPod Touch, it should automatically be "backed up" to your iTunes library when your iPod is connected. It should then be viewable on your computer via iTunes and QuickTime.
I dont though so the itouch is great for me I do however agree with you... only if this thing had the ability to connect to the internet at anytime anywhere
