it's instructive that this mini-meme focuses on slavery, rather than the preceding/following statements about women's rights or whatever.

Attention teabaggers, freerepublic, stormfront etc: We have a black president - this is no longer news; get over it.

That's almost irrelevant to your statement. John Edwards would drop a ya'll in speeches pretty regularly, get folksy with the people, but that guy was about as "folksy" as Queen Elizabeth once he was locked back into his gated community.

Obama cut his political teeth, or at least spent his formative adult years, on Chicago's south side. I would venture a guess that he picked up some of these colloquialisms you complain about there. Does that make them any less genuine? More genuine?

You don't know either men personally, so it's pointless speculation. More importantly, it's completely irrelevant to the speech he made or anything else of consequence that he does as a president.

I'm still kind of confused why the slavery comment is being scrutinized in the first place.

did it not take time to free the slaves?

As far as i can figure, and judging by the source, this is the release of pent-up anger relating to their eventual freeing.

among other things, it equates Obama's economic policies with Lincoln's (and the country's) heroic efforts to free the slaves, and suggests that opposition to said economic policies is somehow equivalent to opposition to freeing the slaves or women's suffrage (and implies it's racist/sexist to oppose the president.)

    ^^

is that what you interpreted out of it?

taken in context, the message I got was that it takes time affect change.

Naturally, because you are an intellectually honest, rational individual possessing basic reading comprehension skills.

it took time for Hakeem to learn what it took to be a champion; it took a civil war to free the slaves.

    What does this post mean?

First of all, Dream knew what it took to be a champion as he had been close before... 3 Final Fours and an NBA Finals against the Celtics. He just needed a bunch of good teammates. (And sports is a stupid analogy because sometimes, the ball bounces oddly.)

Second, it took not only a Civil War, but decades of work by Abolitionists and moralists and politicians opposed to the expansion of slavery and newspaper editors and authors and pastors and a whole host of folks who laid the groundwork.

i would submit that Akeem thought he knew, but in fact had no idea how much commitment, hard work, and fokasssss it actually took. talent and experience alone were not enough.

but thanks for making my point about the "slaves" reference. hopefully, fixing the economy won't take "decades of work" and a civil war.

Basso how would you propose "fixing the economy"? I would like to have a policy discussion with you.

You're right, it would be more of a beatdown than a discussion due to your lack of knowledge in this area, and due to the fact that to the extent you are able to parrot anything, you're pretty much wedded to a failed system that is intuitively dubious and empirically wrong. Effectively you would be suckling spoiled milk on this one.
