If anything the resoultion still needs follow-up as admitted in my non-biased link...Resolution 1701 is NOT Iron clad, NOT specific in established wording...So in other words, final details are not fully set, nor committed, but to be addressed...what we DO know is that there are 5 basic criteria and one of which is the disarmament of hezbollah including international arms embargo...and we DO know Israel's position on the response in the face of such infringement...

I have actually read the resolution you are referencing and there is nothing in it that gives Israel the right to do anything of the sort. Feel free to read it yourself since you obviously haven't. You're simply taking a quote from an Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman and pawning it off as what is in the resolution. That's pretty lazy and actually rather shameless on your part. I suggest you have a little more integrity in your future responses and perhaps you might want to educate yourself on the nature of wikipedia.

You're absolutely correct that UNSC 1701 isn't iron clad on the wording regarding the disarmament of Hezbollah.

What that's saying is that it is important to have no weapons without the consent of the Lebanese government. Technically that could mean that Hezbollah could keep their weapons with the consent of the Lebanese government and since it never says "require" it isn't a requirement of the cease fire that Hezbollah disarms.

What it does say specifically is:

I don't see how Israel's attack on Baalbak couldn't be seen as violating UNSC 1701.

About as much of a chance as he has of stopping arms to Israel.

Really, does anyone think there is any way to stop Hezbollah from rearming?

Actually, I bet that now...Hezbelloh will get more arms then ever.

Keep in mind that Lebanon was part of Syria until about 100 years ago. Syria for example would have more of a claim to Lebanon then say Russian or American or European Jews to Palestine. Also Syria was asked to come in and actually contributed to the peace that existed till Israel invaded.

Is that to say that Lebanon should not have had the right to break away from Syria. Not necessarily. Just that it helps to know some history.

Oh I get it. The Lebanese i.e. Hezbollah can't rearm, but Israel can get more arms from the US and continue to occupy parts of Lebanon. Great aysmetrical treatment if you can con the world to it.

Time to cut Israel off Americans tit and make them realize that they will have to negotiate with their neigbors and return to the internatinally reconginzed pre 1967 borders. Stop building new settlements. Or--- gasp! learn to live in a multicultural, multiethnic Palestine. You know sort of like the freedom of religion and lack of a state religion that we have in the US.

That article is put in place under certain other conditions about when peacekeepers can or can not fire their weapons etc.

But aside from that, your argument has zero to do with Israel breaking the cease-fire.

Pointing out what has or what has not happened regarding the UN doesn't have a thing to do with Israel showing proof justifying their violation of the cease-fire.

and the US can also speed up shipments of cluster bombs to israel to use in civilian areas in clear violation of international law.

Yes, it helps to know some history, glynch. Lebanon was not part of Syria "until about 100 years ago," because what is now Syria was part of the Ottoman Empire.

    From Wikipedia:

Syria was part of the Ottoman Empire from the 16th through 20th centuries, and found itself largely apart from, and ignored by, world affairs.

After World War I, the Ottoman Empire was dissolved, and in 1922 the League of Nations split the dominion of the former Syria between two countries: the United Kingdom received Transjordan and Palestine, and France received what was to become modern-day Syria and Lebanon.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syria_(Roman_province)#Early_Christian_and_Islamic_history

Lebanon was merely a part of a larger province of the Ottoman Empire, of which the area of modern Syria was also a part. Sorry, glynch, but your position doesn't hold water. At all.

Excellent point Deckard. Neither Syria or Lebanon (as we know them) existed prior to WWI and both like Iraq, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia were created by the Allies following the defeat of the Ottomans in WWI.
