I'm not referring to a group of posters that has displayed any inclination to follow the give respect take respect philosophy. Actually it's quite to the contrary, in fact this group constantly goes out of its way to play up acts by Muslims and diminish acts by Israel. I don't think I've yet read ATW say that articles written in the US or Israel have to taken with a grain of salt.

A nation being run by so-called Jews trying to oppress black people? Oh gee, where have I heard that one before? The Rothschild Zionists are inherently racist, especially against black people.

The fake Jews (Zionists) use the real Jews like a human shield so that you can't talk about them. Christians sympathize because of the semi-religious connection, not realizing the fake Jews are hardly Old Testament followers.

It's worse than discrimination against blacks (I'm black btw). You can talk about the president, Gentiles (regular whites), Asians, Christians and Muslims but never the Jews. And you wonder why they're so successful in today's society.

This not to mention the Zionist-led genocide in Israel against the Palestinians.

Exactly. That's why it's questionable to say the least. It's definitely a bad thing, but I don't know that it rises to the level of sterilization. It is a forced temporary sterilization, however.

Either way Israel is in the wrong here.

Yes, those Jews are so racist and evil that they brought them from Ethiopia to Israel to sterilize them. Obviously. Not to mention nearly everyone who rants about the Rothschild I can pretty much peg as an anti-semite.

Exhibit A as to the ideology that permeates among so many. I'm basically saying people like the Rothschilds aren't really Jews.

Plenty of real Jews oppose Zionism, which is not anything like what we are taught is real Judaism:

Your problem is your growing fanaticism about a single issue. I've broken with other liberals on this board to agree with you at times, but it seems like your posts about these issues are growing more and more unreasonable. If this was a country in the Arab world you would be all up in arms. Why can't you agree that SOMETHING wrong is up here. Israel has a long history of human rights abuses against minorities. Why is this story difficult to believe?

Israel boycotts UN rights council in unprecedented move

The Israeli authorities refused to co-operate with a fact-finding mission investigating settlements

Israel has boycotted a regular review by the UN Human Rights Council, the first time any country has done so.

The move was expected as Israel has long been angered by what it claims is unfair criticism from the body.

A decision last year to investigate Jewish settlements in the West Bank prompted Israel to announce it would no longer co-operate with the council.

Meanwhile, the US has suggested the outcome of Israel's election may revive hopes of peace with the Palestinians.

Outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she believed the election "opens doors, not nails them shut" during a "global town hall" meeting at which she took questions from internet users and broadcasters.

Right-wing and centre-left blocs won a roughly equal share of seats in Israel's Knesset (parliament) in the vote a week ago. Talks to hammer out a ruling coalition are under way.

    'New territory'
Following the no-show by Israeli representatives at Tuesday's meeting of the UN human rights council in Geneva, the meeting was suspended and a response is being decided.

"After a series of votes and statements and incidents we have decided to suspend our working relations with that body," Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor told the Financial Times on Tuesday.

"I can confirm that there is no change in that policy."

Council spokesman Rolando Gomez told the Associated Press that Israel's unprecedented absence had put the council in "new territory" because attendance of the Universal Periodic Review was mandatory.

Haitian representatives failed to appear before the council in 2010, but on the basis that their country had suffered a devastating earthquake. Otherwise, so far all countries - even Syria and North Korea - have attended.

Israel's action has prompted concern that it might undermine the UN's human rights work, says the BBC's Imogen Foulkes in Geneva.

Human rights experts fear other countries facing awkward questions might follow suit.

Even Israel's biggest ally, the United States, had urged Israel to take part. The big question now is what - if anything - the UN can do about Israel's refusal to participate, our correspondent adds.

A joint statement by eight Israeli human rights groups said: "It is legitimate for Israel to express criticism of the work of the council and its recommendations, but Israel should do so through engagement with the Universal Periodic Review, as it has done in previous sessions."

In her comments on the prospects for peace between Israel and the Palestinians, Mrs Clinton - on one of her final public engagements before stepping down from US President Barack Obama's administration - struck a positive note.

She said in the elections a "significant percentage" of the Israeli electorate had indicated they believed "we need a different path than the one we have been pursuing, internally and with respect to the Middle East peace process.

"So I know that President Obama, [and] my successor, soon-to-be Secretary of State John Kerry, will pursue this, will look for every possible opening," she said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing Likud-Beitenu alliance took the largest single share of parliamentary seats in the poll, but its tally of seats was down by a quarter.

Yair Lapid's newly-formed centrist Yesh Atid party surprised observers by coming second with 19 seats.

I knew Israel has had disputes with the UN in the past, but I didn't think it was this[/bad]. Kind of ironic, given that the UN's partition was what created Israel in the first place.

It's not sterilization. It's a 3-month contraceptive. As much as you and others would like to blow this out of proportion to once again make Israel look like the devil, it's still not sterilization.

Some of my Muslim facebook friends posted this story, all outraged. I doubt they even bothered to read it. Many of them just want to smear Israel any chance they get due to their religious biases.

    http://www.timesofisrael.com/israel-changes-birth-control-policy-for-ethiopian-immigrants/

    Is the source still biased?

Sure it's not sterilisation, and the authorities haven't officially admitted to anything, but giving a directive telling doctors to stop prescribing the contraceptive is tantamount to saying 'Yes we did it in the past and now we are telling them to stop'. Or else why would they need to do it? I normally don't care for Israel and am not particularly for or against it, but this is pretty bad stuff. If anything, this has some similarities to China's 1 child policy (essentially forced birth control) except one is biological while the other is judicial.

They didn't order them to stop administering it. They basically said they need to be extra careful to make sure the women understand the drug before they get it.

The problem with you is that you're succumbing to the same extremism that you claim to fight against. Would you wait on the facts if this country being discussed was Jordon, or the UAE instead of Israel? I agree with you where most of my fellow liberals don't: I do think that Islam lends itself to more rights violations than other belief systems on average. I do think that it ought be called out. But every week I see you post a thread pointing to some problem with extremist Islam (and I agree with you on most of them), but REFUSE to acknowledge the same type of rights violations from other groups. Call out the horrible abuse of women and Islam. But also post a thread about the horrific abuse and cover up on the part of the Catholic Church that affects thousands of family every year. Post a thread on Israel's abuses against its own Arab population. Post a thread on politicians suppressing gay rights in a day and age where it's embarrassing to do so. If you're not going to post about it, at least don't refuse to acknowledge it.

The only reason you refuse to acknowledge this is a bad action on the part of Israel is because Israel is generally thought to be opposed to the Arab world, and the Arab world sometimes blows Israel's actions out of proportion. So instead, you use your animosity related to a cause your very passionate about and you refuse to look at things objectively. That, my friend, is extremism. That's what leads to bad politics, bad discussions, and increased hatred for one another.

I appreciate that I dominate your thoughts and control your emotions, SC1211, but this thread is not about me.

brantonli24, thanks for the link. I read the article, and the facts as stated in that article are far, far from a concerted effort to sterilize Ethiopian immigrant women.

Basically, it sounds like a lot of these women are completely uneducated, do not understand the concept of birth control, have a lot of kids which they don't have the money to feed and which causes high cost for the state because the kids of uneducated people mostly tend to be uneducated themselves.

It sounds like some individual people and perhaps also some officials think it would be better for the state if these people get educated about birth control and use contraceptives. I would agree with that.

The problem is that some of these people don't understand anything, so it's hard to even educate them.

But then you have to let them be, you can't just give it to them if they don't understand what it does and what the side effects are. The Israeli government has acknowledged that and given out a corresponding directive.

The media reported this, in a manner very critical of the government.

I don't see what the big scandal is.

In fact, again, I applaud the move by the Israeli government to clarify that if someone doesn't understand what a medicine does and what its side effects are, they should not get it. I also applaud the freedom of opinion and of the media in Israel, which allows to put checks and balances on government policy. The majority Muslim countries in the Middle East should learn from Israel's example in that respect.
