The day after the world was rocked by imagery and video pouring out of Israel showing a highly coordinated, multi-domain, surprise assault by Hamas which left hundreds dead and scores of hostages, the region sits on edge. What is sure to be a massive ground operation into Gaza to eliminate Hamas as a functioning entity is being prepared and just how long it could last is anyone's guess. At the same time, there are major fears that this conflict could spill out into a much wider one, with Hezbollah, and its massive Iranian-supplied arsenal, being of great worry. With all that being said, let's get caught up on major developments.

Israel has declared a state of war, the first time since 1973 this has occurred.

Yeah, I know - I don't know the specifics of how it will all work but I am guessing that is what they will do.....

Has any Islamic country condemned the attacks?

If Hamas is Iranian, it may be time to go after the head of the snake....and kill their leadership.

Would you support Israel fully annexing the West Bank and Gaza? Would those Arabs become Israelis? Or would they be forced to evacuate the borders of Israel?
How do you think Israel should attempt to resolve the issue of the millions of Palestinians? No one wants them.

A one state solution is so appealing on the surface except demographically it would fail and Israel would just be resorbed.
Two state solution failed, and I believe the Orthodox block already see the West Bank as becoming Israel.

I stand with Israel but I don't that support does not extend to killing tens of thousands of Palestinians (or millions as some are suggesting) in response either. It's a tough balancing act for the Israeli government for sure. How do you destroy an integrated terrorist organization without destroying a people?

If you really took the time to read that, and that's the point you took from that post, then I just have to disagree with you. I think you misread it. I think it's more like the person wrote, "yes, it's fair to say Israel has done some bad crap and it's fair to say Palenstinians are getting screwed, but it does not justify what Hamas is doing. It does not justify Hamas' mission. If Hamas gets its way, Israel will be completely destroyed."

    That's an understandable position.

I mean if Israel were to attempt to decapitate the Iranian nuclear program with their F35s, today is the day to do it.

Imagine going door to door in every house in Houston but imagine all of Houston living inside the loop. Think about what you're saying

The program is under ground in bunkers.

We don't need Israel bombing Iran. That guarantees 130+ oil.

International hostages in Gaza means that foreign assistance will be offered to Israel to help recover them, but the situation just underlines how tough doing so is going to be. Such a large number of hostages, which is said to be in the hundreds, being held in a dense and very hostile urban center that is about to become a full-on war zone drastically complicates already very complicated hostage rescue operations.

The Pentagon has directed USS Gerald R. Ford and its strike group to the Eastern Mediterranean. It was decided to do so as a contingency in case Americans need to be evacuated, but also as a deterrence signal to the region. It brings a vast array of military capabilities right to the doorstep of this conflict. The Secretary of Defense also made it clear that the U.S. is sending munitions to Israel for what is clearly going to be a sustained operation.

When it comes to possible expansion of the current crisis, nowhere is being watched closer than Southern Lebanon where Hezbollah poses a huge threat. The Iranian backed militant group is sitting on a absolutely massive arsenal made up of increasingly capable weaponry — suicide drones, long-range rockets, and cruise missiles — as well as tens of thousands of artillery rockets. Its capabilities have metastasized to the point that if they were to fully activate, the damage they could do to Israeli population centers is of grave concern. Israel has the most advanced and deeply-layered integrated air defense system (IADS) on the planet, but it would be deeply overwhelmed if Hezbollah were to unleash in full force.

I know that is a logistics discussion, I wouldn't know where to start, but I am sure Israel has plans that are already there to be put in place.

If Hamas is the problem Israel should be going after every known Hamas member - anywhere.....it is pretty clear there is no negotiated settlement to be had.

There are only two paths to peace:
    Compromise
    or
    Conquest

Usually the US looks for an “enemy of my enemy” situation. Like the Kurds in Syria or Taliban fighting the Russians etc. Who regionally hates Hamas more than the US or Israel? This is a situation that might call for more intelligence and state department craft than just straight up bombs and bullets. But if there was an easy solution I would have thought it would have been done between the Bush era and now. The only thing we did was arm and Israel to the teeth and we see now that even that strategy isn’t fool proof.

The US policy now seems to be trusting Israel to conduct a humane operation with our equipment and training. They’ll probably be utilizing five eyes intelligence as well. Unfortunately like every other war in the Middle East the innocent caught in harms way will pay the biggest price. You’ll see more mass migrations which will lead to more racist movements in the West which then ultimately leads to more blood lust for war in the Middle East to go shoot up brown bad guys.

I would largely agree with that. The Israeli policy of collective punishment and the seizing of Palestinian land is wrong and does nothing to bring peace. Attacks by Hamas and other groups on civilians including the kidnapping of civilians is despicable and does nothing to bring peace.

yes it is understandable there is anger and hatred in both sides. Acting on that and just accepting that just means more anger and hatred will continue.

Israel already conquered the Palestinians long ago. As we Americans should well know it’s occupation that is difficult.

Seriously those who say “total victory” is the path to peace in the Middle East what do you think Israel should do more to the Palestinians?
