doesn't something inside you sound a warning bell at the prospect of LITERALLY following something written 1500 years ago? when people thought the world was flat? the sun revolved around the earth? slavery was ok? call me a cultural imperialist I guess but that just seems completely silly to me. as ridiculous as the religious right can be in the states, as a group, you guys have them beat by miles and miles and miles.

Not to be mean, but this isn't true. From the Greeks people knew the Earth was round. They just thought you could fall off of it and that the extremeties were populated by bright-colored mutant creatures (seriously).

Please do not even think that all Muslims think or are alike. There are many many different sects in Islam...some are liberal and some are super conservative.

I don't fault anyone for covering up, wearing a scarf, etc., but some Muslims want to force their belief upon others and thats wear the problems lie.

I think we should designate some small ass patch of a land somewhere and all Muslims who want to be super-conservative can go their to reside. That way we dont have to put up with their beliefs.

Well, technically I only said people believed the world was flat, and I'm not sure that's incorrect since I didn't say ALL people believed the world was flat. But I'll defer and thank you for the, uh, colorful....example that makes the same point :) .

No doubt. I actually have a good friend from a rich family in Kuwait, with a Harvard BA and JD no less, that continues to argue with me that there is a divine right to rule! I'm not quite as flabbergasted at that sillyness, but its close.

Well considering that old piece of writing has supported so many modern scientific discoveries, so many health discoveries etc etc, no i dont think its silly following something written 1500 years ago.

right. you replied saying you do it because some vagaries about its health and scientific discoveries (whatever that means). so i ask what that has to do with women covering up, you say it doesn't have anything to do with that.

its like picking up an encyclopedia and saying some things in this book are proven true or beneficial, so i'm going to follow everything in the book by the letter.

no no no, you said, why do you belive in a scrip written 1500 years ago, i said one of the reasons is that it is such an old script yet it has in it the holdings of such modern discoveries in science and health.

No, theres a difference, and encyclopedia is a group of facts and discoveries already made, the quran said stuff that wasnt discovered yet, and thats only one reason, there are other reasons too.

you ask like what, i would have to say the teachings in it, the kindess, the politeness, the way you speak to youngers, stuff lke that.

I'm glad that there are Muslim voices of reason here, in contrast to extremists such as Sane and adeelsiddiqui.

This is sad, specific religion notwithstanding. I can't think of a single good thing that comes from thinking this way.

Well, other than the cure for cancer, evidently.
