I have to agree with those that think she should give up basketball if her religion forbids her from wearing the regulation uniform. While I can appreciate how important basketball probably is to her this is still an optional activity. Its not like they are going to kick her out of college for something like this and if her religion is so important to her she should be willing to give that up.

There's a similar debate going on in the main sport I do Judo where someone, not a Muslim, has filed a lawsuit against the United States Judo Incorporated to allow people to compete without bowing to their opponents while locally some Muslims have asked that they be allowed to compete without bowing because in Islam you can only bow to god. To me though this defies the essence of Judo which upholds mutual respect and is as integral to the it as the actual competition. Anyway bowing in Judo has no religious meaning and is a sign of respect like a baseball player tipping their hat to the crowd.

IMO if someone doesn't wish to bow or can't because of religious regions then they are free to not do Judo.

Fortunately, Hakeem did not need to resort to using religion to justify intolerance and forcing his ways upon others.

Should one person change for a whole league, or should the whole league change for one person?

if she can still play to the same level...who cares?

if she can't play to the same level...then she should be cut from the team.

but assuming it has no effect on her team...on her play...i don't think it's an issue.

the league shouldnt change, shes not asking everyone else to come down to her level and wear a head cover and full sleeves. she wants to do it. I saw no problem when all these players started wearing head and arm bands. I think its right there. As long as it doesnt affect the game let it be.

    Ageed.

If it doesn't affect the game, you accomodate someones religious beliefs.

If Rimbaud's post is accurate -- looks like she may have cried discrimination too soon in this case. You do have to vet it through the league. But the league should be ok with it.

I was responding to your hypothetical Hakeem question not the muslim chick question.

I still maintain that all hot female basketball players should be required to wear the standard beach-volleyball attire.

    Sincerely,

aah, as to sir olajuwan, If he said he wanted to play without shoes on and wearing a leather jacket because his religion said so, i say hell ya let him play, this man brought us 2 championships. ofcourse as long as it wouldnt affect the level of play.

as for the womens attire, see brazil's olympic womens team....

Wow - you don't hear about many women converts to Islam. Somewhere out there feminist nazis are turning in their graves.

Sure, let her wear whatever she wants as long as it doesn't jeopardize her safety or the safety of other players. I'd think a bodysuit-type thing under the uniform would do it?

Sure. You don't expect people to join cults or the GOP either. But they do.
