So if the populace is not of significance then discrimination is OK?

they should NEVER teach religion in schools as far was teaching straight out of the religous text. now, being able to take a philosophy or a class on a religion is different because it would be optional. i have no problem with this presentation if it was OPTIONAL.

And there needs to be a presentation on math or science, or drugs...because kids in america are falling behind....

I'm sure you realize that questions like this are nothing more than rhetorical nitpicking.

These instances would be addressed as needed as they arose and based upon the level of necessary action.

Like the current situation; where federal hate crimes were being considered.

They didn't teach straight out of the text here, as I understand it. The point was to mitigate ignorance which was causing discrimination with a little bit of perspective straight from the horse's mouth.

Well you did say once their population becomes big enough and they're seriously discriminated against we'll talk about. I think that Satanists and many others are seriously discriminated against everyday in the Christina dominated society of America.

I'm saying if we're provided with that instance where we have the kind of events happening that allegedly happend against Muslims in this particular community, then it's something we'd discuss. But all that is hypothetical.

I've never met a Satanist. I'm not advocating treating anyone poorly. Quite the opposite. This is a huge red herring argument, Lil Pun. The reality this principal was facing was discrimination against Muslims that was causing some problems.

How do you know the context in which it was presented Max? If you were a parent would you have liked to have the opportunity to go to this meeting?

How about being informed that it was happening BEFORE it happened?

    That is my biggest beef.

I'm not just talking about Satanist, I mean any other group excluded from the major five everybody is talking about. You don't think they've been offended or made fun of at school before or some discrimination hasn't happened? I just doubt a school would let them state their case or be so understanding, so to speak. There was a local example up here a few years ago, I'll try to dig up more information.

My biggest gripe is that the students were forced to listen to this without consent. I would actually support things like this and more of them but I don't see things one-sided either and I realize that some people are sensitive about religion and the like. Inform the parents, at least they'll know and can have a say and you avoid the furor over such incidents but once you let one in you've got a nice argument to let others in.

This incident sounds like nothing. When I was in high school, we had to sit through the Power Team , who ripped up phone books and then told us we should come to church with them that night to learn more about the good news. It made the papers, but in a good way. But then again, the Power Team is a christian organization.

I'll say it one more time:

we already do this, Lil Pun. We already limit the number of religions that get study.

This particular principal was not dealing with a problem regarding discrimination against other religous groups. The problem was discrimination aimed at Muslims, in particular. We can make up all sorts of "what if's" but that's not what happened here.

I'm pretty sure my 8 year old could handle it. I'm ok with him being exposed to what other people believe.

But remember, DD thinks the presentation was a "soft recruitment" tool. Of course he also thought that Jeff Bagwell should learn to throw left-handed.

LOL - I asked if he COULD learn to throw left handed, or why not try it?

And I still believe it had some soft recruitment in there.

You guys can be FINE with them having the presentation to your kids....but I have a problem with it being done to MY Kids without my permission.

Good for you, other parents thought differently.

So sorry to have a difference of opinion.....

Apparently a lot of Friendswood residents got together to air their concerns about the dismissal of the principal, although the ISD said that the principal herself asked to be reassigned, to avoid this exact situation the school is now in. Some Friendswood residents were worried that their community is being painted as racist because of the concern over the presentation, while others did state that this presentation was only being objected to because of the fact that it was about Islam, and had racist overtones. So it looks like their community is deeply divided over this one as well, and quite passionately so.

I don't care where you stand on this issue, but I really think that at this point everyone is blowing this whole thing out of proportion. It's over with, the principal was reassigned and I'm positive that next time this happens parents will be notified in advance, if just to avoid any possibility of a similar outcry/controversy from the community or the media. But the moment the conversation turns into "You're a racist" and "I'm not a racist" shouting match is when I lose interest.
