I don't know what to tell you. Here's the video straight off of Hulu. Watch it yourself. It looks to me like yours has been Photoshopped, or maybe the TV station that you took it from decided to edit something else in. <div class="videoembed"><object width="512" height="296"><param name="movie" value="http://www.hulu.com/embed/HHYffzbhn-xLcqGfmsk_Hg/0/23/i17"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.hulu.com/embed/HHYffzbhn-xLcqGfmsk_Hg/0/1292/i17" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" width="512" height="296"></embed></object></div> <p><br />
How many people actually watched the episode in question? Considering how much it got censored, how redundant it was (I mean did they really have to bleep out the stupid obligatory moral speeches, including freaking Santa's?), and the whole censor bar appearing and disappearing with Tom Cruise after he got made fun of, it's hard not to see it as all being done on purpose. When will the masses ever grow a brain
If what this article says is true, Comedy Central is an enormously hypocritical pile of crap. Worse, by heading in this direction they're not improving things but actively making it worse. Insane!
Without death threats either. Novel, I know. Someone always complains. I remember on the Simpson's 20th anniversary special they talked to a catholic anti-defamation guy who's complained like 300+ times about the show in letters to the network. The level of irriation and coordination in this instance is special, and I have no doubt that it is due primarily because of the emphasis being placed lately on speech designated as "offensive" by muslims. The problem as I see it is that instead of using their shows as a way to emphasize free speech, they have (unintentionally?) incited all the groups that formerly accepted the clause of speech as a trump card against offensive displays to rethink their strategy. The US is already quite full of folks who think christians are unfairly persecuted or being forcibly removed from aspects of everyday life - now you're adding massive fuel to the fire. It's maddening! The christian groups have a point - why is it ok to mock jesus but not mohammed? This is america. You can mock whoever you want. Anything less is bigotry and cowardice.
The only difference is that the Islamists make death threats and have already killed or tried to kill people over cartoons. It works for them, apparently.
It's technically OK to mock whoever, just because a private company succumbs to fear doesn't mean that it's not ok to mock Islam, they are just scared of what might happen. It's easy to accuse them of a double standard when you don't have to take the risk of what might happen.
"Scared of what might happen" implies two things: 1) Comedy Central is full of wusses 2) The notion that muslims tend to be violent asshats predisposed to disdain "western" government has validity.
I wouldn't say it like that. I'd say there are more violent asshats among them, for whatever reason, and as a whole, they are way more sensitive and easily outraged on average than anyone else, and that feeds into the violent asshats thinking they are right to do what they do.
It only took one guy to stab Van Gogh and it would only take one guy to stab Trey Parker. It's easy to say other people should have conviction and stand up for what's right, but you don't have to make the real world call. Personally I don't think anything would have happened.
I think he's trying to emphasize that being Islamist isn't always being extremist/willing to use violence to achieve their agenda. It just happens that ~80% (made this number up) of Islamists groups are like that.. I recall you've highlighted in the past that all muslims aren't like the extremists so your choice of words was probably for convenience sake.
I googled and there are apparently tons of definitions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamism I used the term in this case as a contraction of "islamic extremist" (as opposed to a regular Muslim who does not endeavor to force his beliefs upon others).
