He picks up the ball too early after bringing it across the half-court line. He's fine when he penetrates, and doesn't jump to pass, but he still picked up his dribble too fast after crossing the halfway line, looking to pass to one of our high post players.
I like Ish but he needs to eat, breath and sleep jumpshots. Rondo can get away with it because of how he can control games but Ish NEEDS to be able to at least hit 40% of his shots for him to be an effective PGuard longterm.
The best thing about him is his lack of mistakes. You know, for all the awesome passes he makes, the percentage of them that end up with a bad result of any kind is remarkably low. As in All-Star PG low. And that is very exciting. What this means is he's got the raw talent necessary to be great. Now he needs to start developing his fundamental skills to achieve that potential.
He made those floaters during the preseason. I know it was just preseason, but he showed he can make them. I agree he needs more time to get used to regular season pace and to practice, practice, practice.
Props to Ish, he looked great out there. Has a lot of potential, he will be scary good once he develops a shot. Glad to have a true point on the team!
I heard of ish smith but since i dont watch college i never really saw him play until he was a rocket. What's his potential and is he legit? He looks good on the court but will it be short term? Why was he undrafted?
don't be too excited on just one game performance. in my opinion, the only advantage he has is his talent on passing balls, comparing the other guards but he also has many shortcomings that could hurt us.
The guy has amazing court vision, and his creativity with the passes are easily one of the best in the NBA. Most importantly, he takes good care of the ball. He only had 1 TO this game and the game against the Spurs. 6 assists and 1 TO against the Wolves 7 assists and 1 TO against the Spurs. That is a pretty damn impressive ratio.
i think we're overrating him, for now at least....if everything that was said in the OP is true, he would have been drafted without a doubt. To say he has elite handles is an exaggeration, as he hasnt really been able to use them to get by players one on one. He's also nearly lost the ball a few times when he's in traffic and trying to dribble out. It's really that he's alert when he's dribbling and he's able to keep moving out of the way. Solid ball handler, but not elite. When someone says "control the tempo", i feel as that means they're constantly controlling it, slowing it down, speeding up, based mostly on their feel for the situation, not whether the defense allows them to or not. Ish is just pushing the ball every time, if he gets stopped, then he pulls it back out. It helps, but he's not actually controlling the tempo. He can get to the paint consistently after pushing the ball, but to say he can get to the rim itself, and at will, is also an exaggeration. He actually has come up well short of the rim on several occasions, which is why he's missed so many runners. It's also not at will when you're taking what the defense gives you. He's a very good third option to have, but still not a very good point guard. As teams get more tape on him and get a better feel for his game he's going to hit a bump in the road...let's hope Lowry can return quickly to help out.
Rondo wasn't shooting too well when he started off. Give Ish some time. He'll get better at shooting.
his court vision is pretty good, especially on the fast break, but i think we have yet to see anyone put real pressure on him. His low turnover rate is mostly due to his playing style. He doesnt really drive inside in the halfcourt and on the run he gets ahead of players well enough to not allow them to get their hands in. I expect teams to start picking him up sooner and shift their focus to him right after a Rockets def rebound.
I don't agree with this logic. Every once in a while, in all sports, stars either go undrafted, or are one of the last picks (look at the Texans with Arian Foster as an example...surely he should have been drafted in the top two rounds).
I don't have a rebuttle, except to say that I did. Happened once/twice with Scola on the receiving end, and once with Chuck. Was worried the ball might be turned over at those points but nothing happened; the big guys managed to shake their men. In Scola's case he had to come out pretty far/almost upto the 3pt line. I think it was in the 3rd quarter of the Timberwolves game.
