Clearly you were not alive during the Yao/Tmac era.

...been sitting near court side recently too. Don't be too surprised if he stands up, tears away his civilian clothes to reveal he is wearing his old rockets jersey(the old pinstripe ones) and is ready to play.

Or like, last year. We're getting bit by the injury bug pretty bad but only Jones seems like the one who's going to miss months. We lost Bev for 1/3 of last season and Asik for almost half.

If it's up to McHale he would not even play when Beverley is back so..well done Morey and co, we will be out of the playoff picture soon. Counting on freaking Terry now, should've had AB as insurance for that old fart and Daniels cannot be relied upon so Garcia better get his form back soon!!

No NBA team is built to weather injuries to three starters and the backup PG. Your standard for preparedness is ridiculous if you're really putting this on Morey.

Also, the Rockets barely need to go .500 now to make the playoffs. So...let's wait for the fat lady, eh? At least we're not in the Thunder's shoes.

Looks like he might be back Saturday, along with Dwight, or the next game.

So, perhaps I haven't played basketball at a high enough level to understand the nuances of this, but here's a question I've always wondered: Why don't basketball, especially high-value NBA players, wear ankles braces to prevent this?

I tore up my ankles consistently playing baseball in high school by rolling them, often as bad as this. In one case, I actually could blame the crappy field. High top shoes did nothing to help. I play volleyball now, and I rolled my ankle on a landing and was out for four months. Since I came back, I use two ankle braces that have COMPLETELY eradicated the prospect of any more rolled ankles. They're tight but not rigid, and I don't think they impede my movement at all. Many of the people I play with use some type of ankle brace. I can't believe EVERY NBA player doesn't use them when the prospect of rolling an ankle is probably even higher than in volleyball, and the result for the team is catastrophic when one of your key players goes down. It's the same with knee pads; all volleyball players wear them, though for different reasons, but Dwight only recently started wearing them to protect his knees in the knee-banging gauntlet where he plays.

So, anybody have any insight as to why these simple protective measures are so uncommon in a sport where they would have a huge effect towards reducing injury? I'm genuinely curious. Canaan's sprain there could have been prevented or at least been greatly reduced in severity just by wearing a brace.

Ankle braces are great, but they have several tradeoffs from my understanding (as someone who plays for leisure, I use them, but I can notice these issues, too):

    1. Not very comfortable.

    2. Extra weight on your feet, which is possibly the worst place to have more weight as a running/jumping athlete. Slows you down, even if only slightly, and bad for your knees.

    3. Apparently they weaken your ankle over time.

    4. Make your knees more susceptible to injury (partially related to #1, but also just a result of the fact that when certain things happen, if you're ankle won't budge, something else has to... #1 was more about wear-and-tear issues)

One or two other problems I can't quite remember off the top of my head. My ankles are like glass, so I practically have no other choice at this point, and I'm just playing not-too-intense pickup or friendly games anyways.

    5. It definitely affects your range-of-motion. The effect on movement/agility I think is more noticeable in a sport like basketball than it would be in volleyball.

And I don't think ankle injuries for NBA players are nearly as severe as what you're describing. Even for me, who sprains ankles pretty regularly, my worst sprain ever tore a ligament, and I was still only out eight weeks (was on crutches for four). And that's without the benefit of a round-the-clock, highly skilled team of professional trainers and doctors. I've never heard of any NBA player being out for more than about a month at a time with a sprained ankle.

Then there's some guys who are just naturally practically immune to serious sprained ankles, and obviously it makes no sense for them to wear braces.

yea, I've heard some sport physicians mention this as well. Puts more strain on your knees

My daughter plays high school basketball and their program requires them to wear ankle braces. She switched from the "team shoe" to one she wanted to wear (Jame Harden's Nike low in a different colorway). She went down with an injury (girl landed on her foot) a week ago in a tournament... when I saw her go down I initially worried it was the new low... but it turns out it was worse... a break in her firth metatarsal (fortunately not a Jones fracture like Durant). Out 6-12 weeks... may mean she misses the rest of the season.

Her doctor isn't a fan of the braces either... they protect against minor injuries but cause problems elsewhere... her doctor thinks they contribute to high ankle sprains.

Ankle joint is suppose to be mobile, knee isn't, hip is. You disrupt that, by bracing the ankle, and you increase the risk of injury to the knee or foot (the closest joint in either direction) because now something around the ankle has to give more to allow motion.

That's why you're not really suppose to brace or tape them, although some people have too much mobility, so some bracing may help. Some people ankles may lack mobility, so a brace just makes the joint even tighter. Because of this variance, you can't just have everyone brace up. You're better off strengthening the mechanics of the leg and making sure everything is stable and firing properly.

In Canaan's case, a brace wouldn't have prevented that much inversion. It could have reduced it, but again, if the ankle doesn't have enough give, then something else has to give. Lessening the ankle sprain could have resulted in the knee twisting too much or in the wrong direction. I would much rather roll the dice on an ankle sprain than a knee injury.
