I see your point. If we were to trade Yao im sure we would get alot of talent in return. BUT why would another team take a risk and give up thier talent for an 18/8 guy? Somthing to think about there...
i'm not putting in falsehoods...i'm saying i watched last night and didn't see a bunch of doubleteams on yao. i see them sagging like crazy on tmac, when he penetrates...but i'm not seeing a straight up double on yao. maybe i'm missing it. if it's just the product of a zone defense, then hell, every post player in the league is drawing a double.
They’ve only done that recently because running the offense through Yao has looked so terrible the past 2 seasons and has hurt everybody's game (Francis, Mcgrady, etc.) that they had no choice but to build the offense around mcgrady.
because of his value OFF the court. that's my whole point. yao has tremendous value to a franchise in terms of marketing dollars. he's the hottest commodity in the world in sports...or at least in the top 5. he's the NBA's best worldwide product, by far. owners would kill for that. and honestly..it's why he won't be traded anytime soon. because les loves that. i prefer rings, banners and parades.
Believe me. I've watched the games. I've watched Yao's hook shot this year. It's way freaking off. This is the money shot. Without that shot, Yao is relegated to putbacks, dunks, and layups off guard penetration. In other words, Yao is purely a roleplayer without his once killer hook shot.
Look around the league, I am not sure we could get good enough offers for him: Boozer: a 20/10 guy, but his lazy defense is exposed badly this year Brand: another 20/10 guy but a perennial loser. His defense is good though. Randolph: great numbers but atrocious defense. Oakfor: great rebounder but weak FG% (44%) J'Oneal: the ball is not in our court. Amare: pipe dream .....
What if scenarios are a b****. Every franchise goes through what if scenarios. It's what you can do now that is important.
Yeah his value off the court is extreamly high... Your making some valid points but I just can not and will not take the chance on trading the next best center in the league. Why? Theres plenty of T-Macs in the leauge and im sure many to come BUT finding a BIG MAN thats another story.
plenty of TMacs?? ok, you lost me there. there are not plenty of guys who could be repeat scoring champs, anywhere. there are not guys who can flat out take over games like that guy can. tmac is an exceptional talent.
i don't disagree with that. just pointing it out...that's why i said, i hate to look back because of 20/20 hindsight. but it is what it is. GMs get criticized on "missing" all the time.
Let's not kid anyone. Yao's value on the court is far outweighed by his off the court value. Of course, it depends on which team he is on. Teams like the Memphis Grizzlies reside in towns with hardly any Asian population. Then you go to the opposite end of the spectrum with a team like the Lakers that plays in Los Angeles where there is 1.3 million Asians living in Los Angeles county according to the 2000 census. His value is much greater for some teams than others.
I say throw the towel in on Yao. Mutombo is outplaying him. He just can't handle this physical NBA style. The Rockets will not win a championship with Yao.
That's right. For more than face value, we can only trade Yao to Lakers, Knicks, Warriors, Clippers, or Nets. Not many good options though. Lakers: Odom + Mihm Knicks: Crawford + K.Thomas Warriors: Murphy + Dunleavy Clippers: Brand + Kaman Nets: Kidd?
It is much greater for some teams, but it ultimately doesn't matter that much. The Lakers are going to sell out most of their games because they are the Lakers, Yao Ming or not. And they're going to be on TV a lot, Yao Ming or not. It's not the additional number of Asian-American Houstonians that come to game sthat make the Rox a much more valuable property. It's the things like the endorsement deals with Tsingtao beer and visibility in China proper and things like that. Yao Ming's impact isn't really on teams local bottom lines as far as fans go except as a short term fix in a few extreme situations, but his real value lies in his global appeal.
I remember the 1996 Sonics. There was Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp, and a bunch of 3 point shooters. Nate McMillan was killing it from outside. Sam Perkins was shooting from outside. Hersey Hawkins was a premiere 3 point shooter. Even Detlef had a pretty good 3 point shot. The Suns remind me of that team except Nash is a damn good 3 point shooter while Payton was just an average one. Sonics this season are succeeding because of what Bruce Bowen said on the Jim Rome show. Bruce Bowen said the best teams in the league are shooting 3 pointers very well. This is why the Sonics have beaten the Spurs twice once at home and on the road. I'm no basketball expert, but Bruce Bowen is pretty knowledgeable.
Great. Then trade yao to Lakers for Mihm. Every yao-hater in the board will be happy. Rockets will win a Championship this year! I can't wait.
