I think we can only hope that Yao watches some game tape and gets some coaching help on what he should do with certain double teams when's deep in the post and gets the ball; he can easily do his jump hook instead of passing it out... It's up to the coaches to point this stuff out.
maybe coach A want to play outside, so he told Yao to attract double team and make some open place for those jumpers
IMO, Yao to attack himself or pass the ball out is greatly depends on the coach's strategy, if coach A ask Yao to take the charge of the crutch time, Yao will do that.
Another bad game for Yao, playing scared. In the 4th quarter, the Rockets give the ball to T-mac and let him shoot his way to victory. This might work against lesser teams, but not against the Suns, Spurs, and Jazz. Like some of you said in the Rox vs. Clippers thread, he has become a role player now. Did Yao played his best ball last year? It looks like it. I don't think he will ever average more than 25 points a game.
Doesn't mean anything. Consider that Hakeem didn't even score 25 a game until his 9th season. In fact, he scored 24.1 in his 6th season, then dropped to 21.6 and 21.1 the next two years before vaulting back up to 26.1. Not that raising Yao's points per game should be all that important in the grand scheme of things, but one down year (while learning a new system) doesn't mean much of anything.
Really, scare of what they keep running plays for T-Mac because it was working and he stop Kaman completely, They keep leaving Rafer open and double on him all the time is doing the right thing passing to a a completely open outside shooter, to bad Rafer didnt want to take a shoot at all in the 4th. BTW the defense won the game for the Rox in the 4th Quarter.
Let's face it Yao plays like a pansy when the game is on the line and he starts feeling all the pressure... without tmac on the floor yao at best would lead a team to 25 or 30 wins in a season... In my honest opinion if we do not upgrade at the point gaurd position or find a legitimate third scoring threat we will never win a ring with yao on the floor.
At the beginning of the season he was scoring with no problem (player of the week anyone) Then the other teams find out that ours guard cant make a basket from the outside and they decided to double, front and play their around stooping Yao.
There wasn't anyone alleviating the pressure on Yao last year that isn't on the team this year. Therefore it would make sense to blame the new system more so than Yao. He's just going through some growing pains, which are worsened by his teammates horrid shooting lately. He's also playing more minutes but taking 1 whole less shot per game compared to last year, so I think he's just letting things come to him more until he knows the offensive scheme by heart.
No you cant say that he is scared, though he did not take on the team in the final minutes most of the time. This is a complicated problem, and IMO lack of killer instinct contributes 50% of it, 25% thanks to referee and 25% dues to strategy of coach.
Is not about the player is about their performance. 3p% RAFER 22% - last year 36% BATTIER 36% - Last Year 42% Head 36% - Last Year 44% Give last year stats and Yao will be facing less double team or at least no that aggressive double team. Yao % are the same FT% are the same, minutes are higher whats the reason? less plays run for him. In the beginning of the season Yao was making a lot of clutch basket in the 4th, now team are just focusing in Yao because lets face it this team is shooting worse that last year fron 2 and from 3 and that witha more efficient Tracy.
Last season was the first time I saw him dominated games consistently. His dominance changed many people's opinions of him. They saw that he wasn't a bigger version of Rik Smits, who was very good but far from a dominant player. Prior to last year, he would dominate one game and reverted back to passive Yao the next game. This season, he's going back to old Yao even though he put up big numbers. His numbers are misleading. Receiving a pass for a uncontested dunk is good for ESPN and gives him 2 points but that doesn't mean he dominates games. If he were dominating, he would post up and then 1. score 2. draw fouls 3. draw double team and find open teammates for wide open shots. This is reason why people said Shaq was a dominant big man and made his teammates better.
You just describe a inside out offense, The problem that is not Adelman offense. He post and them 1- Player cant give him the ball 2- He plays in the high post more 3- He get double and find a open teammates that either miss or pass the shoot. He is not getting involve lately, Adelman is system is base on a team game and not made for a Big dominate player. The game vs Mia, the first 3 plays when to Shaq, Houston first 3 plays didn't involve Yao, Houston did't score first 3 times the basket came right when Yao touch the ball the fist time. Get used to Yao and T-Mac will scored about the same but this time with T-Mac getting the big share of the points at a a higher percentage. Once the team start playing Adelman game you will enjoy even with Yao only getting 22 or 23PPG with a less dominant performance, but hopefully a better result come playoff time.
It's not about the number of points or rebounds. It's about the right way of utilizing Yao, getting him involved and pounding the other teams. here's an analogy. T-mac's led offense is like the Marshall Faulk's Rams. Look great on TV and in the regular season, but is just average in the playoffs. on the other hand, Yao's led offense potentially can be like the Emmett Smith's Cowboys. Pound their opponents to submission.
Yao definitely looks more tentative this season in general, but especially in the fourth quarter. I'd like him to play stronger, force the action and not just settle for jump shots. Of course, that's when he even takes the jump shot. Sometimes he holds the ball and seems to wait for the defense to dictate what he does than being a bit more aggressive. I'm hoping it's more a slow adjustment to RA's offense than anything else.
The difference is that a running game in football is less likely to result in a turnover. Whereas pounding the ball into Yao against good teams is much more likely to result in a turnover.
yao simply needs to cut down those turn overs.. protect the ball/hold on the the ball tightly and don't travel..
