    it's Jet Li, not Jack.

What I can't believe is that this thread has so many posts. The suggestion is so absurd. So there I go adding to the post total.

i bettcha Yao has consulted with some Zen Masters about his name before he came over. if you know anything about Chinese culture, a good name is one of the most important luck a person can carry with him. in his case, "Yao" is the best and simplest and he wouldn't want to change anything being afraid of messing the karma of the things. what's better than Yao?? it resonates with power yet very hip at the same time. :) "Ming" is also easy for foreigners to say AND remember (now that's the key). so any suggestion of his changing to an English name is just ignorant of the culture and simply shows a lack of any marketing sense. "Michael Yao"? lol.

for education purpose only: do you know what the names of Chairman Mao and Premier Zhou mean? Mao's name, Ze Dong, means "may His glory bless the East".
Zhou's name, En Lai, means " His magnanimity comes across all the land". those two were the giants among Chinese statesmen and have changed the course of the whole world (for better or worse anyway).

in case you wonder, my parents didn't give me a good name and that's partially why i'm wasting time like this. :D

    peace.

what the hell are you talking about? Asians in America have English names? How are Asians any different than other Americans? Since Asians are Americans and heve been in this country for more than 150 years, why shouldn't they have english names? What does that have to do with Yao? That's like saying Dirk Nowitzki should change his name or the American Ambassador in Indonesia to change his name to an Indonesian name. You must be confused buddy. Yao Ming is not an American. He's Chinese. Not Chinese American but Chinese. Would you change your name to Japanese just because you work for a corporation in Japan? Come on now. Let's put these stupid assumptions/stereotypes to rest.

Don't over react. Most Chinese have English names when living abroad. It's more convenient. Foreigners also love to have a Chinese name if they are in China. Not a big deal.

    A few more names.

    porve Yao
Luke (I'm also your son) Yao
    Dunc-on Yao :(
