Why in the world would Yao want an English name?

His name isn't extraordinarily long or unpronounceable. It's short. Two syllables. Unique. Easily lengthenable for the PA announcers. It's perfect.

Why would we suggest an English name for Yao? It's kind of an insult. By the way, over there in East Asia, most names come with Family name first then given name. So Yao is actually the family name. Same thing for the other Chinese player, Wang is his family name, and the correct way to read his name is Wang Zhizhi. I guess the reason for many Asian people here to have their names read as "given name + family name" is to avoid confusion (interestingly enough if an American person goes to Asia the name is not "adjusted" to "family name + given name"). As for the English name, it is probably because Chinese is so different from English (and it uses characters instead of alphabets) that it has many sounds that are almost impossible for non-Chinese to pronounce, so an English name is chosen for convinience. It probably has nothing to do with "being recognized". Please, by all means call the person (not necessarily Chinese or Asian) the way he/she prefers --- would it sound crazy if someone suggests Coach K (over at Duke, I can't remember how his last name is spelled) to change his last name's spelling to reflect the correct pronouncation?

lol. seems a lot of new users missed out the "george ming" joke. There was someone claiming he met with Yao's father early in Yao's first season. and he said yao's father told him his name is george ming. :D

needless to say, that guy got bashed and laugh for quite a while and that's why rocketforever used that reference as a joke. :p

and btw, what's porve? I'm wondering about it as well...

How about a typical English name that doesn't match the person who can't speak English well. I've seen many of them:

    Harrison Yao
    Wally Yao
    Wilkerson Yao
    Garrison Yao
    Johnson Yao
    Smith Yao
    Jefferson Yao
    Hubert Yao
    Walter Yao
    Michaelson Yao
    Gunnison Yao
    Anderson Yao
    Jeffrey Yao
    Wilbur Yao
    Leslie Yao
    Neilson Yao
    Keifer Yao
    Thomas Yao
    Lance Yao
    Davidson Yao
    Terrence Yao
    Ferris Yao
    Morris Yao
    Ellis Yao
    and the list continues.

BTW, I am Chinese, but I was born here and telling the truthy. So no flames lol.
