seriously, i dont think yao will never ever get an english name. whats it for? "yao ming" is good enough. its easy to prononce for english speaking ppl, not like some other chinese names you dont even have the sound in english for them. besides, the name is already accepted by everyone and there is really no need to have another one. one last point, yao is at a totally different status compare to those chinese in america who have english names. do you see any chinese official get an english name just for better recongnition in the america?

Well an English name seems rather pointless. But given how well he seems to have bonded with the team I'm surprised he doesn't have a nickname (Dynasty doesn't cut it for me, too impersonal and Steve barely knew Yao when he threw that out).

But I still expect a teammate to say anyday "we call him ____".
    It seems almost overdue.

I like the absurdity of us picking a name for Yao. Maybe Tim can make this a Rockets promotion.

"Hey folks, be sure you get to the Toyota Center early for tonight's game. The first 1,000 fans will get to vote on the new name for Yao Ming!"

Since he's in Texas, should pick a Southern name. :D

Oh, how 'bout Roy Yao. . . to take it back from Amare.

Seeing as Yao now has a whole lot invested in his name and public image for endorsements and such, the worst thing he could do is change his name. Companies are paying him millions for his endorsement; a name-change for him would be more like a re-branding campaign, which you don't want to do at the drop of a hat.

:) Totally agree. I was just following this silly exercise out to its natural conclusion---- we're finally seeing fewer threads of the "What did Yao eat for breakfeast?" variety, and now we're trying to give the poor kid a new name.

(although, to be fair, coming up with cool rhyming names is kinda fun. not tryin' to hate).
