How much of the great defense by Ducane is star treatment in NBa? Michael Jordan could pretty much do what ever he wanted in his prime to defend others while if someone else touches him it is considered a foul. If the refs call a foul as foul and have no star treatment or bias do you belive Duncane would be that much better than Yao? He might still be better but I doubt it would be by a big margin.

Let's not kid anyone here. Tim Duncan was a consensus #1 pick by everyone when he came out of Wake Forest. Heck...Rick Pitino went to the Celtics thinking he would be coaching Duncan. It was like when Shaq came out of college. Noone even gave it a second thought about drafting someone else as the #1 pick.

Yao was indeed drafted #1, but it wasn't exactly widely accepted. Some folks wanted to see Jay Williams selected. What did Dick Vitale say? Yao has climbed a wall of skepticism in showing he can actually ball in the NBA. There are 3 players in the NBA who are incomparable: Shaq, TD, and KG. That does not mean Yao is not becoming a force in the NBA. TMac had an opportunity to play alongside Jermaine O'neil when the Pacers offered Artest and Harrington to the Magic. Both coaches are good. Carlisle and Van Gundy are respected around the league. The roleplayers are similar if TMac goes to either team. The defining difference is the big man. TMac chose to play with Yao. TMac went where he felt he could get a championship.

Duncan got a taste of impartiality. He does not like it.

i noticed that yao seem to be able to deal with double, triple teams better recently....
he seems to make his move faster too and taking it to the hoop more

and he's getting fouled a lot too.......

and what happen to duncan today......

I think these olympic games were really good for yao. he now has a taste of what its like to be a leader and was forced to take on the double and triple teams and still get his shots in. can't wait for him to dominate next season.

I don't think his defense really relies on star treatment at all. He has sound fundamentals, good timing, and very long arms. The refs usually allow some body contact down below, but all good shotblockers get that respect. In the olympics Duncan seemed to get many of his fouls while rebounding, and several offensive fouls. Now if Yao was allowed the same body contact as Duncan (which he's not, and it pisses me off) he would be a much more effective defender. Still, he's not near as mobile nor does he cover as much ground.

Apparently, Pau > Yao > Duncan in international play.

I didn't watch the game but I heard Yao was in foul trouble and played with 4 fouls in most of the 2nd half. Playing with fouls can really bother the big men and reduce their effectiveness. Just ask Duncan.

Have you seen the some of the fouls they call on Duncan? Absolutely ridiculous calls.

Its thought that Steve Francis didn't make the olympic team because of Stu Jackson, but I think Larry Brown had something to do with it. Remember the game back when Steve and Larry got into an argument over Steve making a last second bucket during a Rockets blowout win. From that day on, there has been bad blood between the two, and I wouldn't be surprised if Larry vetoed Steve from the Olympic team. I just can't fathom them picking Wade over Francis. Not saying that the outcome would have been any different. We still would have probably gotten our butts kicked, but I think we would have had a better team with Stephon and Steve playing the point.

With the way the refs called the game, Shaq would foul out before the end of the first half in Olympic games.

look Yao Ming is awesome. did you see the game against Lithuania when he was tearing down the rim?

Lithuania, meanwhile, is also awesome. they have 10 dead eye shooters from anywhere. China needs to develop some of those.

Spurs have Manu Ginobli at shooting guard. I see no reason why they would want TMac. TMac had 2 legit choices where to go: Pacers or Rockets. Excluding the external factors like the city and taxes, the primary factor for his choice was the big man in the middle.
