Just imagine if the rocks had 15 turns instead of 30 and now imagine how points Yao would have had agains the Mavs?

    35-40?

If this team would learn how to pass and then Yao could learn positioning and not moving as much, he would be a top 5 player for certain....

I'd like to drop a bomb in here, Ewing.

    Top 10.

I am really talking about where Yao is right now and I don't thinks it's fair to use his whole season stat to validate your point.

At the beginning of the season, Yao could not find his shooting touch after the weight he put on in the off season. And the team was making some adjustments under JVG. I'd rather use his stats after his personal breakout game against the Timbervolves back in Jan to evaluate him. And of course, his recent performance tremendously elated his stock in the league and we might have witnessed the true transition from a SF team to a Yao team. In the past 3 games, I have never seen his teammates work so hard and give him the ball (although we have still problems doing that), and this was against Lakers, Timber, and Mavericks. Remarkable.

Using his performance in the last 2 months, I think it's clear that he belongs to top 15 at worst, and an argument can be made for top 10.

I voted top 15.. there are still other players that have more of an impact on their teams and on opposing teams but Yao is right on the cusp. He needs to learn to become more consistent and his stamina needs to improve, he cant be great if they cant play him.

If he picked up a few more rebounds and blocks a game and maintained his current scoring he would become top 5 in now time.

for people saying Peja, Brand, J. O'neal, etc. I would suggest that you keep stats out of it and look at impact and the way teams have to scheme for you on the floor.

even a Stephen Jackson can put up amazing stats - when he is the only option.

How about looking at it this way- how many players are there you would trade Yao straight up for right now?

    Duncan
    Garnett
McGrady (maybe- have to think about it)
Lebron or Carmello (no, don't think so)
    Shaq (nope age got him)
Kobe (if I'm not thinking clearly)

I think Yao has pretty high value right now

So by this argument, if a player ranks #2 straight across the board, then he's the 2nd best player in the NBA? :p

His efficiency rating per 48 minutes is rated 6th. But his total efficiency is, iirc, around 19th.

As his minutes rise, he'll be in the top 10 in term of total output. He's not entirely there yet.

And no player rank number one because that requires a player ranks #1 in every category. :D

I think Amare is still better than Yao Ming.

Yao scores 1.44 points per shot at #6 in the league. Amare scores 1.32 points per shot at #20 in the league. Amare score 1.5 points more than Yao because he takes more shots at a much lower efficiency. Yao is also better than Amare in most of the categories. Houston is at 36-26. Phoenix is at 21-42. Every GM will choose Yao over Amare at the same price.

I'd put Yao in the 7-10 range. This coming from a non-Rockets fan, so no homerism is involved.

Garnett, Duncan, Shaq are on their own level.

Kobe, Kidd, McGrady are on the next level.

Then comes the Yao level, which also includes Iverson, Nowitski, Kirilenko, Brand, Peja, Pierce, and Jermaine O'Neal.

Personally I'd take Yao over all of the guys in that last group, which makes him #7.

Ask all 29 GMs in the league that question. I think that the Suns are willing to offer Amare + Marion + Johnson for Yao and the Rockets still won't pull the trigger.
