Of those 5 days a year 60% of the time it's just an excuse to get out of work or to not go somewhere.
in med school students are taught to wash their hands before n after seeing a patient. anti-bacterial lotions are also used often in hospitals. As a mysophobe i hate people who don't wash their hands.
it's just fear mongering. much ado about nothing. if the germs made it on to your hands in the first place, then you are exposed to them. at least, externally, if not internally before you're hands were sanitized. does he suggest we lick our fingers clean after using the restroom? no? so washing MOST of the germs off is okay, but make sure you leave a few. and he's applying this theory to the human race, as though all of mankind is using hand sanitizers. and that those who do are so vigilant and thorough that no germs make it past the gauntlet. and that these vigilantes are significant in numbers to affect the immune system of the entire human race? i'm sorry, but i have more important things to worry about - like the end of the mayan calendar and extraterrestrial invasion.
The doctor has a point that the immune system is like a muscle that you have to exercise to get it strong but just like a muscle you don't want to overtax it. I mean if handwashing wasn't good for you then we should see people living in countries with poor sanitation being more healthy but that's not the case.
No it's not. The overuse of soap with triclosan and the like will lead to bacterial resistance but not the usual soaps and hand sanitizers. Especially hand sanitizers, all they contain is basically rubbing alcohol? How in the hell would that lead to extreme germ resistance? lol. That being said even though I've learned about the triclosan soap evils in microbiology, I still use them. Meh.
exactly! I hope he is only referring to antibacterial. I dont want to be examined by a doctor that doesnt wash his hands with soap, and I never want to be in surgery with a doctor who desnt wash his hands, before sticking his fingers inside of me.
As a physician, i hope he realizes that over-prescribing of antibiotics and patients not finishing properly prescribed antibiotic regimens have more to do with the development of "supergerms" than hand sanitizer ever did. Breaking the cycle of infection is the most critical part of preventing illness = provide clean water, wash your damn hands, etc. Bottom line is, worry about yourself and the people around you. Leave the general well-being of the human race to the experts.
I am always gonna wash my hands, bathrooms, particularly on college campuses (dorms, rec centers, class buildings) are disgusting.
+1, There is a reason why some schools require freshman to get the meningitis vaccination before they can live in dorms
