I don't think he's the type of player that would get a contract elsewhere. One of those guys that you must have one on the team, but too many is unnecessary. I'm sure he'll get signed, but I'm positive he'll get cut again.
Havent gotten to watch the preseason like I wanted to. What is the big deal about Harris? Is he a rookie b/c if he is I thought Morris Almond was the big man on campus (Rice U)
He was the cheapest, easiest player to cut. Beyond just the obvious fact that he isn't signed to an expensive multi-year deal and so is cut-able, cutting him saves a roster spot. That in itself is still about money, though. We certainly could have and would have signed Mike to a cheap 1 year deal with no qualms if the roster spot was available. But since it's not, had we still gone ahead with that route, that means we would have had to cut someone else who already IS making guaranteed money. I believe Morey has been and continues to try and find beneficial 2 for 1 or player for TE type trades to clear roster space and save money, but it isn't easy. It would have been great to keep Mike Harris and put him in the NBDL, but as already mentioned, you can't do that unless he makes the cut...so same salary cap / luxury tax implications. And, as "exciting" as Mike was, for every Azubuke, there are a bunch more scrubs who are never more than scrubs, or turn into Chuck Hayes' of the world, resigning with the original team they had practiced with. Mike could be back. Or not. Not a big deal either way.
He's 6'6 and plays PF. I would keep him if we let go of Chuck Hayes. Harris is nice, but we don't need him - that's what matters.
I think he was cut at this part of the preseason to allow ample time for him to find work somewhere else. I think the Rockets figure that he's not in their equation because of their bench, but they cut him early in order to allow him to find a roster somewhere. I think the Rockets did a very justifiable and honorable thing in this regards. I'm sure Harris appreciates his opportunity.
New thread *maybe* not needed, given ongoing Harris discussions. I'm a Harris fan, but I'm not voting, given only two extreme options. I trust the coach and the management to weigh the cost/benefit of another contract that would probably have contributed about 5 minutes per game, max. I wish Harris all the best, and would have liked to keep him instead of some other guys, but I'm not all that upset.
tough decision but someone had to go and in this case it was perhaps the best of the players who battled for a roster spot. On the other hand it was also the cheapest one to let go!
Yes I would have taken him a head of Landry, Novak, Snyder, Butler, and Lucas. This move was all about the money because these other guys have guaranteed contracts.
I'm one of the ones who have loved him to stay. But, I voted yes that he needed to be cut. He is the only person that would make economic sense to cut.
harris was a non-guaranteed contract that was really just brought into camp to take a look at, like jacobsen and haraysz was last year. i dont think he was going to make a team that needed cuts he was the only player the rockets could cut and not have to pay. financially it was the best move for the team. it was just a bad time, i am sure last year or the year before that he could have had a realistic shot to make the team and actually play..this year it would be extremely difficult. he may be signed again in the future if not he was able to give himself a shot and i am sure other teams may be looking at him too. harris plays 'bigger than his size' but we already have an overachieving undersized forward in hayes. i hope he is given a second chance though by another team.
I vote no for obvious reasons. The return of SF3 and signing of Landry is 2 bad moves this offseason. They force the FO to do something they don't really wanna do. I think they cut Harris first to give him time for another job in other teams. Wish you good luck Mike Harris!
This poll question seems to be right out of a RPG game... Can I come with you? No, I dont need your help, fool. I am Kobe wan Enobi! Yes, I need all the help I can get. Rafer is on my team.
I believe all those players could help the rockets one way or another. It's really sad hearing anyone is cut. But still, the Rockets have to cut some five players. What I could do now is just believing in the manager and the coach, believing that they are doing everything they could to minimize the hurt to the team.
Really man...what's done is done. Leave it alone. Morey obviously thought this was the right way to go. As much as I liked Harris, there was no place for him in this rotation.
Harris wouldn't get much PT here anyway, and woudln't develop. Fact is, a team gunning for a ring doesn't have room for rookies or guys with a lot of potential. It won't surprise me if Landry gets cut or moved.
