Is Van Gundy a right fit for Yao?

I approach a lot of the threads on this BBS as the same. While it's easy to say that we need a better coach, point guard, power forward, etc. most people don't offer up a solution.

I don't know if Van Gundy is the best fit for Yao. But at the same time I can't think of too many coaches that may be better. Then when you narrow the list down to coaches that may be better and that are available, I think it's even harder.

One reason why I do like JVG though is because he's been a big man's coach and while the rest of the NBA seemed to have developed offenses revolving around swingmen, JVG continued and still does seem to have an offense that does start in the low post. However, after are team's slow start we do seem to be looking inside a bit less. Nevertheless, I can't really think of another team aside from San Antonio that emphasizes a low post/half court game as much as we do.

I second this! Why nobody start a thread "fire Ewing"? Actually I don't know the role of Ewing as an assistant coach. Maybe he is hired as JVG's bodyguard so that he can save JVG from holding someone's leg. ;)

As much as I hate to say it, if we could convince Phil Jackson to come to the Rockets, I think it would be a good fit. The Zen Master is a great motivator and I think that moreso then X's and O's is what we need to get our players to the next level. Could you imagine how easily Phil Jackson would bond with Yao? He's always been able to get the most out of his players and make them realize their potential ala Jordan/Scottie and Kobe/Shaq and as much as he seems a cheeseball for only accepting talent pooled teams, you can't belittle the fact that he's taken his teams to the next level.

In retrospect looking at the spawning of this thread, I do feel it's a bit premature to hang JVG out to dry, but I can't help but think that all of the trades and acquisitions are going to hurt us in the long run. I love the veteran acquisitions of Wesley, Sura, and Barry, but we need some youth to grow up with Yao and Mcgrady. These veterans aren't going to last for more then a few years and then Yao and Mcgrady will have to start over again with a new set of teammates. Just look at how we passed up on both Arroyo and Damon Jones.

Anyways, in my opinion, the Rockets goal right now should be to pick up complimentary players who are under 30 and let them prove themselves before locking them in for a few years so they can grow with Yao and Mcgrady. If we can't under Van Gundy and we can't get the full potential of Mcgrady and Yao unleashed then we shoul
