Cost of living is irrelevant - the contract Correa will sign is to provide him wealth for his entire life. Where he lives the next 10 years (or less, if he ultimately gets traded during his contract) is a nonfactor in the larger picture of things. If he buys a more expensive house in NY for the next 10 years, he'll also sell a more expensive house 10 years from now when he leaves.
How much will the flooded short stop market really effect Carlos price? If I’m another team with payroll I would think hard about signing Story or Seager instead of Correa considering it would be more economical. Really you would need at least 2 teams to get a bidding war going, but is it worth it with 5 good shortstops available?
I wonder if the flooded market will really have any bearing on Correa’s contract. At the outset of the season I assumed it would, and obviously it’s not going to hurt…but maybe it’s kind of like Manny and Harper…CC is just a tier above other players and maybe it’s just a matter of time until one owner pulls up the Brinks truck irrespective of the other options on the market. Like shopping for Bentleys when there’s a glut of Mercedes and Acuras. Edit: i’m listening to Marly Rivera on MLBNetwork Radio, and they are hyping up CC to the Mets and having him at third base, and salivating at the idea of a majority Puerto Rican infield. I would think CC would want to stay at short stop in the immediate future, but maybe Cohen makes an offer he can’t refuse.
You are right in that there probably was some amount of discount. I just don’t see any indication Carlos viewed the risk in a way he’d accept 200M. Ultimately we’ll never know as you said as the Astros clearly were not going to make an offer like that and even with this season it’s not clear they will. I agree it made the decision easy (but that doesn’t mean I think it was “offensive”).
Is Carlos worth more to us than other teams? I think so you don’t spend 30+ million on a guy unless you wanna contend or you just really need To spend $ . Like how many teams are rebuilding ? Probably not a fit for correa ? Then you look at those that have good young SS already ... To me the biggest threat to land correa are the teams that are also losing good SS and realistically want to be in the playoffs NOW . we have $ coming off the books . Core guys under contract and some good OF studs under control . Garcia , kiddy , lance , Javier , and framber under control ... Keeping Carlos and keeping the team highly competitive is worth it . In some scenario where we choose to instead add better value WAR and spend on pitching , we are taking just as risky of a bet because we are spending on pitching . We just have to get close . If Texas offers him a Huge deal , we have to get close . We have more wiggle room if it’s from a state with income taxes . Correa wants to stay here . He will take a pay cut . But it can’t be insulting , and he has to believe ownership is actually doing the best we can . Make or break decision for crane imo . If we lose him we HAVE to win . It was bumped recently ... Some discussion about the extent of tanking we did . Like the payoff had to be big to justify it . So far , it has been . if we make the emotionally hard decision and let him go (assuming the price isn’t out of our reach) then the payoff HAS to be big . We have to smartly and correctly use resources and make up for losing a known stud by winning . he wants to stay . Houston wants him to stay. I hope they can make the $ work
absolutely . 6-120 and then 5-125 were somewhat slaps in the face . I don’t care that you are negotiating against yourself . 8-200 is NOT done unreasonable money to offer and it would have at least been a real offer . idk if I blame click or crane or boras ... but it has always been clear as a fan that Carlos wants to be here ... so I just don’t know why we didn’t make a better run at him .
I believe the Astros think Jeremy Pena can produce a .260 avg 20 hr 77 rbi Jeremy Pena is next man up Rumors are Carlos Correa and Aaron Judge are talking. Smh Move on, with $300 million the Astros can sign Top Prospects, Resign Tucker, Alvarez, Graveman many more
The Astros do remind me of the 2002 Mariners Randy Johnson for Freddy Garcia, Carlos Guillen, John Halama Ken Griffey Jr for Cincinnati Big Contract Alex Rodriguez left for Texas 10 years $300 million All left or got traded Traded for prospects, started winning again
Another random thought to ponder is this roster has 3 players you could’ve never gotten without tanking Correa, Bregman, Tucker and to a lesser extent McCullers. You get the cheapest years of their career, but they become somewhat irreplaceable because talents of their magnitude are easier found high in the draft. Sure you have Altuve and Yordan that you got for nothing but those kinda outcomes are very rare. Ultimately I just hope we’re able to keep some of these guys Astros for life. If not Correa I wouldn’t mind another 12 years of Tuck in right field and Alvarez breaking Bagwells HR record as he becomes this generations Big Papi.
2000s Mariners and Astros Randy Johnson - Gerrit Cole Alex Rodriguez - Carlos Correa Ken Griffey Jr. - George Springer Griffey Jr and George are having similar injuries, this year George has knee issues
There is no other option. There is no “we tried” or “we gave it a run.” Just do. Just do it. Get it done. Make it happen.
I would offer him the ARod contract. Question is, is that enough to keep him? 10 years, 250 million. It's kind of a bargain, but when you think of his injury history, you'll hate that contract when he's mid 30's. Correa should like the long term security.
