Not meant to as an inflamitory thread. It's just the way it appears after visiting the board almost daily for close to 10 years.

    Observation:
You've got some very insightful posters who are able to articulate their points very well be it left or right. (mostly liberal).

Then you've got what I call the followers who used to be gung ho supporters of Bush especially closer to 9/11, which is natural. The comedy in it is that some of these folks who really didn't have a position at the time have now becase staunch supporters of the liberal sided posters to a point of spewing some mean spirited posts, especially in reaction to known conservative posters.

Now, notice I have not mentioned names. That's not what this post (or at least the initial post...lol) is for. I seriously would like some of your opinions on whether or not you think this D&D board has a liberal majority.

Personally, I do, which if you believe the polls contradicts the feeling of the rest of the nation. But I have also have a theory on why THIS board is has a majority of posters that lean left.

You've been keeping track of a whole bunch of strangers on an internet forum since 9/11 ?

The Internet in general is fairly leftist. Natural result of being a younger demographic compared to general society.

I think they're just more vocal. I dont think the Clutch bbs as a whole has more liberals than conservatives.

    Internet = young people territory

Basketball = demographically not a conservative leaning sport such as hunting, fishing, nascar, or even football

Put the two of them together, and yeah, you've probably got more liberals around here. Not exactly shocking news to anyone.

My biggest issue with this board is that the really awesome, principled, mature, insightful conservative posters seem to not want to speak up a lot of the time, so we're left with what amounts to mostly trolls carrying the conservative banner.

    Yeah....specifically YOU!

I think the posts above pretty much nailed it.

Younger demographic because it's a basketball board.
I also think that there are a lot of folks from different nationalites now due to Yao that have come in. As far as the conservative trolls go not sure who or what. My post # might put me in that catagory but I KNOW I have more history here than the majority of posters. Post counts don't mean jack to me though.

I also wonder how many of the more respective liberals posters live or are from Austin, which is considered a liberal town. (not that there's anything wrong with that)

I guess I'll out myself as a conservative, but I would LOVE to think of myself as centered. However, I also realize that I'm a hypocrite because things I've done in my life have definitely not been in line with the conservative banter. But my basic belief systema and the way I want to raise my children fall more in line with what the conservative message is.

Hate on, if you want ;)

you've also got a fairly diverse mix of groups, largely stemming from the Rockets' player makeup and the diverse makeup of the city of Houston.

For example, you have a fair number of Chinese/Asians due to Yao, a fair number of Muslims due to Olajuwon, blacks due to the fanbase, Indians due to the city, etc.

One thing that is interesting. I am part of a smaller Baseball board, which used to be a part of a largeish baseball BBS and the politics there lean heavily to the right. I am sure there is a "Right On, Luke Scott" post there now, but I haven't checked.

My theory is similar to part of Donny Most's, rap-music listening, "urban", tattooed players such as are found in the NBA probably are something a lot of right leaning people shake their fist at rather than watch

Actually the issue is that facts have a well-known liberal bias over the last few decades.

What you're seeing is the end of the conservative movement of the 80's, - the recent all white senior-citizen led "resurgence" notwithstanding.

Basically the problem is that when you base your philosophy around the absence of something - there's nowhere to go once you get there, especially when it failed.

High comedy, indeed. Well done, SamFisher. However, your post can be discredited with one clear, recent point of evidence.

THE LANDSLIDE REPUBLICAN VICTORY DURING THE MID-TERM ELECTIONS....IT WAS A COMPLETE AND UTTER PWN3RSHIP, BRIZZZAH

Hope you have a great weekend, chap

That's what I notice too. I find that the "liberal majority" is more balanced in their discussion of issues -- willing to criticize politicians on both sides of the fence. I don't see that much from the more right-leaning posters. I suppose this is a natural consequence of the minority segment being in a more defensive position. I don't venture into Republican message boards but I'll give the benefit of the doubt and assume there's more balance and nuance there.

You're right. Popularity is all that matters. That said, keep in mind that Republicans have nothing on charismatic dictators like Hitler, Mao, Stalin, etc. Those guys basically had pretty much unilateral support of their people. Much more so than Republicans here.

Therefore, the whole American system is still broken. We NEED a dictator in this country. Because dictators tend to get 99% popularity ratings. And that's what this country really needs.

I don't think the BBS as a whole is as much leaning to the left as the D&D is.

But it only takes one poster to get a mass reaction of anger and outrage under the self-assumed banner of moral superiority from the majority of posters in this section of the board, while making the majority look like fools. See: Trader_Jorge, basso and a couple of others.

You usually do not see the non-leftist side trying to shout people down like the leftists do. The non-leftist side also does not get as angry. But I guess people consider it fun for a while to see the lemmings scream angrily, then they get bored of it (like Trader_Jorge), so at this point, you have more lemmings.

Then you have the people who are desperately in search of attention and affirmation, especially one person who used to play a neo-con to get attention, now he plays a leftist so he can get affirmation from the lemmings.

By the way, in this post, you could also replace leftist with another word, they form an alliance anyway.

I don't hate, but I'll mention that in relation to your reasonable posts, the idea that you would raise your kids to spend more money than they have, discriminate against gays(and blacks and browns, etc.), reject science, be obsequious to those with money and power, place party and ideology over country, and not consider the welfare of people who sacrificed their health and lives for a better society (like 911 responders) strikes me as odd.

Sorry, but aborting babies, homosexual lifestyles, and a socialist-style redistribution of wealth go completely against many peoples' beliefs.
