Robert DeNiro (too many comedies lately)
    Anthony Hopkins
    Christian Bale
    Ed Norton
    Johnny Depp
Al Pacino (even though he has become a yeller)
    Ian Mckellen
    etc.,etc.

I think Lewis is amazing, but there are just too many guys I would put ahead of him that are still alive and working.

Why does he not do more films? I checked his filmography and it looks as if he has not even done 30 films.

I think "best actor" implies that they are a character actor. Otherwise you're just voting on who has the best personality/charisma.

Lewis or Depp ftw. Although Oldman is so good you don't even realize he's in some movies.

I would put Pacino and Malkovitch ahead. DeNiro may be past prime but he has a better body of work. I still think Al and John might have a couple more great movies in them.

Marky Mark is underrated IMHO and I would hire him any time.

I think you have to put Phillip Seymour Hoffman up there - the guy is just as good a supporting actor as he is a lead actor. And I've never seen anybody who can look so different from role to role without enduring significant weight loss/gain. Depp is also good, although I don't think he's as good in "normal joe" roles - he needs a quirky character to be interesting.

But I don't think anyone combines acting ability and charisma like Lewis does. Most of the other actors listed here (DeNiro, Pacino, Denzel, Hanks) have great screen presence, but they play the same personality over and over.

He is notorious for totally immersing himself into a role and literally "becoming" the character he portrays. Because of this, filming a role is incredibly taxing on him and after each film is complete he has to take to "decompress."

It's amazing reading the stories about when he takes on roles.

I can't even think of the last good movie Pacino's done and I love the guy.

Viggo Mortensen is impressive to me because he actually did a good Russian accent in Eastern Promises.

My choice right now would be Seymour-Hoffman. An underrated guy, IMO, is Ethan Hawke.

The confession scene in The Crucible, when they ask him to sign his name, is one of the most impressive movie moments that I have ever seen.

Daniel Day Lewis and Cirian Hinds are the two best actors out there in my book.

    Will Smith

He went from a skinny, funny Will Banks to a strong, powerful Ali. Not to mention Pursuit of Happyness, the Bad Boys movies, I Robot, the Men In Black movies, and Independence Day. And he did alot of other movies as we all know. I don't know what the board's opinion of Smith is, but I think he is the most diverse actor in Hollywood. The guy can pull off any role.

I've always thought Johnny Depp's movies were a bit strange and lackluster. I never really understood the hype.
