Is there any point to dribbling between the legs in basketball?

Seems kind of pointless, other than to look flashy and to showoff. In honesty, people look like idiots when they do it, when they can just do a simple crossover dribble from one hand to the other with the same results.

it is one of the most basic and fundamental parts of dribbling. it's used to put some separation between the dribbler and the defender while switching hands with the ball.

That's why you should never dribble.

Are you serious man? One of the most needed moves for guards penetrating.

You must not play basketball a lot or handle the ball when you do playing. Like others said, it creates separation between you and the defender and keeps the defender honest. I have defended plenty of people that only have the simple left/right crossover and it becomes very simple to steal the ball from them.

In fact, the move is so useful that I even use Kobes's reverse, between the legs dribble to penetrate zone defenses. So sexy and so fun when you get it right and get an easy layup for yourself or a teammates. And everyone's response is always priceless.

Ya why do people crossover others, lol goshh what stupid moves
-why did Dream have the dream shake lol does that seem pointless as well, when Dream could have just turned, and shot....oh ya it creates separation....and....gets you an open shot.
-as mentioned above the crossover is an integral move to get a defender to bite, and not know what is coming next.

A simple crossover obviously runs the risk of a steal with a well timed hand in. Through the legs gives you the separation as mentioned and is quicker and more controlled than going behind the back to do it. If a player does it with no defender on them then yes it probably is a bit pointless but it's also a good chance to get a few practices in before going for the big one before looking to drive.

Dribbling it between your legs protects the ball a lot better than crossing it over in front of the defender because you have your leg in the way, preventing them from swiping the ball. Crossovers are much riskier because you bring the ball in front of the defender.

OP, it's not necessary, a hesitation and crossover in front if done quick enough with a quarter step back is good enough.

It helps make sure you don't get the ball stolen.

It's purely aesthetic. Just like shooting with one hand. Ppl do it b/c it looks "cool". You should only do crossovers in front of you and shoot with 2 hands in a fan-out motion (even on lay-ups). That is straight up basketball with no bullsh**.

    keep it real brah.

I think the legs protect the ball as well. The defender and reach in on the cross over but going through the legs it about 4~8 inches further away from the defender

In the middle of the court bring the ball up the court with no one around you . . . I'd say it is probably more about habit.
