Is there a cross reference site for hardware compatibility?

I would like to buy a Compaq Slimline 24x cd rom and was wondering if there is a site on the net that lists compatible products. I can find 1/2 height cd roms and notebook cd roms for less than the list price on the Compaq site. Would there be any problem getting a notebook cd rom to work instead of the Compaq "suggested" product?
