Juan, I still believe that Simpson episodes only get better with each viewing (with the exception of the first couple of years). I bet the offseason after our 2003 championship, we'll be talking about how this season's episodes were marvelous while the newer ones suck.

Juan: The thing about Lisa being scared of hell for stealing cable was not a conservative ideology, it was a jab at organized religion. Anyone who didn't know Smithers "affection for his boss" was more than just fondness wasn't paying attention. Ned was "perfect" because of his godliness. I remember an episode where he prayed for a bowling pin to drop and it did. That wasn't in support of Christianity. It was sarcasm.

The Simpsons, the family in the show, may have had a slightly more conservative edge, but the show has never come close to it.

Matt Groening not only does the Simpsons but the Life in Hell cartoon strip of which at least part focuses on two gay men. Groening is also a pretty vocal animal rights activist.

He oversees every aspect of the Simpsons to this day and is a very liberal guy.

The show makes fun of life. I try not to read too much into it as being of any particular ideology. For every jab you can think of at liberalism, there is one towards conservatism and vice versa.

    Life is funny, period.

I've got to disagree on this one. In the sixth episode of the show (airdate: 2/11/90) Lisa is chastised by her music teacher for for playing a bop rendition of a patriotic song.

Teacher: Lisa, there's no room for crazy be-bop in "My Country Tis of Thee.
Lisa: But, Mr. Largo, that's what my country is all about.
    Mr. Largo: What?
Lisa: I'm wailing out for the homeless family living out of its car. The Iowa farmer, whose land has been taken away by unfeeling burecrats. The West Virginia coal miner, coughing up his --
Mr. Largo: Well, that's all fine and good, but Lisa, none of those unpleasant people are going to be at the recital next week.

As for your other assertions...well, I'll have to get back to you after I do some more research [IMG]

How about the entire episode with John Waters where they took Bart hunting to prevent him from turning gay?

Homer also took him to a steel mill that turned out to be an after-hours gay club.

"We work hard and we play hard!"

That episode, in fact, was dedicated to the United Steel Workers of America - "Keep reaching for that rainbow!"
