The Pro Life thing is weird politically for the elected representatives. Electorally, Republicans NEED abortion to remain illegal because it rallies their base. Yet if abortion were to ever made illegal, the backlash from the moderate and liberal community would be insanely harsh. So... strangely, Republicans politically benefit from legal abortion more than anyone.
That's not really a contradiction though, suggesting those guilty of the most heinous crimes die and those who are most innocent be saved from being killed. I don't support that position for practical reasons, but it certainly makes sense.
At worst, a father has to pay child support and many can get out of it. That is their "responsibility." The man doesn't have to carry the baby and does get a choice - that choice is to use a condom or not. That's how men can have power. I am a center left on the political spectrum despite the name calling directed towards me - I will say this. I am completely against abortion in the 3rd trimester unless the mother's safety is at risk. I know I have a fairly mainstream opinion on this amongst liberals. Even the people who I consider leftist (god knows what you guys would think of them) are ok with laws banning 3rd trimester abortions except in the instance of the mother's health being at risk.
its ironic that someone who was a clinton-supporter and pro-choice social-liberal his entire adult life until the age of 65 could be the one responsible for overturning roe vs. wade.
As I am against abortion . . . .my ideas on child support are absolutely draconian If we agree to hold everyone equally responsible Then I would definitely be for strong laws against deadbeat dads and moms. But As long as you allow women to simply walk away from their responsibilities with nary a thought or repercussion then you have to give the man the same right Rocket River
If a woman refuses an abortion and the father wants an abortion - in that case and only that case - yes a case could be made that there should be a legal mechanism freeing the father of child support.
Not only is it not dead, it's taken on the same significance as Vietnam and Civil Rights did for the left in the late '60s. The only differences are that ideology was more generational and cultural than partisan back then, and that liberal politicians had enough cognitive dissonance as administrators and advocates to both cut deals and not let the most extreme and incompetent of their ranks into official government or lobbying roles.
Homicide rate in 1951 = 4.4per 100K (lower than now). The USA had a huge glut in crime from about 1968 to 1998 when it dropped back down, but not quite yet to levels previously seen. The drop in 1998 does not in anyway correlate to the 1973 decision on abortion as the kids born as a result would be 25 years old. If 1973 was the time, you would expect a homicide drop in 1988 when the first wave of criminals aborted would have been 15. These ghost babies aged 15-25 represented the highest homicide rates we have ever had from 1988 to 1998. The timelines and logic doesn't match. 15-25 is criminality career peak. Over a million abortion a year is pretty bad. People believing abortion is working out as some eugenics cleansing is pretty bad considering the incredibly inequitable number of black women getting abortions. I reject any notion it reduced the number of poor people.
Abortions would not be illegal. It would become a states rights issue. Before Roe vs Wade Illegal - 30 states Legal in case of rate - 1 state legal in case of womans health - 2 states Legal in case of womans health or damage to fetus/rape/incest - 13 states Legal - 4 states That was 50 years ago. Times have changed. Vast majority of states would make it legal unilaterally. I doubt any state would make it 100% illegal. Roe vs Wade is just an stupid topic to get worked up about when it comes to concern about legislation. There are too many other topics out there that mainstream America needs addressing.
I was going to stay out of this thread, but you nailed it. If Roe v. Wade is overturned and abortion becomes a legislative free-for-all, I think people are going to be surprised by the sheer force of what happens outside of SEC territory.
The age group that commits the most violent crime is older than you are suggesting. Over the last 40 years the average age of a murderer was between 26 and 30 depending on the year. If you look at the numbers, the homicide rate in the US peaked in 1991, 18 years after Roe and then fell off a cliff over the next 10 years as a larger and larger portion of potential offenders were killed in the womb Also if you look at how many abortions were happening per year, it took just under a decade to become really popular. Basically the increase in abortion rates in the first 10 years of it being legal matches the fall off of murder rate over the decade beginning on the 18th anniversary of Roe. Put simply, abortion works and the more abortions you have, the safer society is because those who tend to make up the majority of those killing their children are those most likely to raise criminals.
There are a few pro choice Republican senators that will not support a nominee that will overturn Roe v. Wade. So it is smart for Trump to not comment on it. Some of the names being discussed are simply not qualified.
I dont celebrate abortion in any form or fashion. Its disgusting to be used as a form of birth control. Its very sad when decisions are made based on the health of the fetus or mother. Rape destroys not just the fetus, but the victim too. I find it absolutely despicable when there are those who are 'proud' and celebrate abortions as its some type achievement in human sociology. That said, abortions by the numbers are alarming when filtered by race. I can't agree with you that it doesnt rude the number of poor people when overwhelming its the lower class who have abortions. Its a debate in which there is no clear answer. A better solution is education and awareness. hiding teenagers and young adults from the consequences of sex is just a terrible idea all around. Abstinence is an solution, albeit a very poor solution.
So, if it doesn't matter according to you....why should they overturn it? Seems a big political risk to overturn something that you think most states would legalize anyway, no? Personally, some things shouldn't be up to states. The rights of people should not be left up to the discretion of states, just my feeling on it.
800K abortions seems to be quite a good time to start counting them, unless you are arguing we have to kill a million a year for it to be effective crime control? The graph looks impressive until you realize if it went back pre 1968 (it starts at 1970) that it would show the high murder rate was simply a generational anomaly. You are having to use two pretty sketchy arguments here to push back the timelines because the data doesn't fit. It also requires belief in a secondary effect and not something in 1994 called the crime bill which was implemented over 6 years from 1994 to 2000. A time when crime also miraculously dropped. 100K more police officers. A three strike rule. Expanded use of death penalty. Billions for crime prevention. If you look at the data and try to fit 1994 + 6 years you get exactly what you would expect when trying to fit a timeline. And the common sense of cause and effect is also much easier to buy. I know it is shocking and hard to believe the government did a thing, but arresting and imprisoning criminals is something governments have always been good at.
There are very few rights that are defined by the constitution. The remainder are left up to the states. Its how the Constitution was defined. If you dont like it, get an amendment passed. Just keep in mind that w/out the Constitution, the wealthy and powerful would rule this country. You should be grateful that you can move to a different state, govern my different laws instead of being dictated by the elite few. Nothing worse than when people think they know whats better for everyone else and feel certain laws and regulation should be applied to all across this nation. Again, we have a Constitution that can be amended if you feel that passionate about a subject. California and New York might be your ideal utopia. For someone like myself, I am grateful I have options to live elsewhere.
