For years (before some of you were around) Houston had 3 newspapers. The Houston Post, the morning paper, and 2 afternoon newspapers, the Houston Press and the Houston Chronicle. The Press was a real daily, not the "Press" that we have today (not that there's anything wrong with it. Seems to be a good weekly). My folks took the Post and the Press, and didn't switch to the Chronicle until the Post and Press were out of business. I agree with all those who essentially say that good journalism from Houston daily newspapers died with the demise of the Houston Post. With all due respect to those here who might work for the Chronicle (I once did, but I also once worked for the Post), it simply sucks. Yes, it well and truly sucks. That is all.
I'm surprised at all the negativism toward the Chronicle. It is definitely one of the best daily papers in Houston.
I wouldn't include the NYT in discussion about the best newspaper out of every US city. I go with the WaPo. On the plus side for the Chronicle, I feel it is still better (and cheaper iirc) than the piece of crap Dallas calls a newspaper-The Dallas Morning News. (I'm not even a major Dallas hater like Houstonians on here, I just feel the DMN is worthless).
Yeah, I unsubscribed to the Chronicle years ago. I currently get the Wall Street Journal Online. In my opinion, WSJ is the best newspaper.
You know what really sucks? The Austin American-Statesman. It's worse than the Chronicle. The rag has really gone downhill the last few years.
