I've heard of it. It's called the "Jeff Bagwell Foundation".

Perhaps Bagwell likes his foundation to stay private. Perhaps he is not soliciting contributions from folks. Many wealthy families start private foundations and fund it entirely from their holdings. I suspect part of his mammoth salary goes into his foundation for charitable and tax purposes.

Just like a very large list of Hall of Famers. Extremely old, oft discredited, argument.

You disagree with the vast majority of fans. But much more importantly, you disagree with a host of people that know what they're talking about: every active major league baseball player that I've ever heard quoted, bunches of managers, coaches, and baseball executives, hall of famers, retired baseball players, and tons of writers. I think I'll take their opinion over yours. That, or just look at the numbers and watch the guy play, and he was obviously great. The greatest ever to wear an Astros uniform, and that includes the great Craig Biggio (a very close 2nd in my book).

And, way to gloss over the absolute fact that the atmosphere was indeed ELECTRIC when Bagwell made those great plays or came to bat. Were you ever in the building (not being mean, there are lots of fans who haven't made it to H-town to take in a game)?

This is cool. That means we're splitting hairs over symantecs. I would agree with you that Bagwell isn't on Jordan's level or Ryan's level (as a whole career). If that's what icon means to you, then so be it. To most of us here, we were speaking of what Bagwell has meant to baseball in Houston and to the Houston Astros franchise--and that is IMO truly iconic. He looms over Houston baseball history as the king in HR, RBI, etc. He stands among the greatest 1B in history, lacking absolutely nothing, and he stands there wearing an ASTROS uniform.

I'll say it again--one day will all tell our grandchildren that we saw Bagwell and Biggio playing together in the 'Dome. It has been a privilege and a pleasure to watch.

If a player makes his foundation too public, some people bash him and claim he is only donating for publicity...

If he donates money privately, he is bashed for not getting the word out enough...

    It's a no win situation..

msn, did I strike a nerve with you? damn. Alright, he's the greatest nl first baseman I've ever layed my eyes on. An electric player, an icon. We even named this site after him.

Greatest Astro ever. I'll agree with that.

I don't want to get the rest of you worked up, but would you say that Frank Thomas is an icon? Or, the fact that he's playing in Oakland now disqualifies him from that title as well?

No. Did I with you? I thought it was a pretty decent baseball conversation until you melted down just then. Sorry.

Bagwell is an icon in Houston. He might be forgotten as the years go by across the country but not in Houston.

The man was the best player in franchise history when it had it's most success, sold the most tickets and is a large reason why we still have baseball in our city.

The thought that Bagwell is not an Icon in Houston is making me laugh. The guy has a statue outside MM while he is still playing.

All this can be said for Biggio as well they're 1A and 1B. Put your personal favorite as 1A, mine happens to be Bagwell. But they inseparatable thats what their legacy will be when it's all said and done.

I really hate to say this but they are the closest thing to Stockton and Malone in Baseball that I've seen. I can't think of Malone without Stockton setting him up. I can't think of Bagwell without him knocking in Biggio.

    Houston Icons:

    Baseball: Ryan, Bagwell, Biggio
    Football: Earl, Moon
    Basketbal: Dream

Across the Nation we only really have Ryan but sadly I think he is remebered as an Ranger.

I think Bagwell and Biggio will get a little more play that we would expect. Just look at all the attention nationally his situation is garnering right now. For example, people aren't writing as much about the Big Hurt and his attempts at making a comeback for a new team.

Another thing: I got hooked on the Astros very early in the '80s, and Nolie was always my favorite. That said, even though he's a hometown guy, he's just not on the same level in terms of his career in Houston as Bagwell and Biggio. He had two great moments with the Astros in an 8 or 9 year run; he had many more great moments as an Angel and as a Ranger. Not to diminish the Express; I just believe Bagwell and Biggio have meant even more to baseball here than Ryan.

No way. Ryan is a baseball legend from Houston. They don't get much bigger.

With a blazing fastball that approached 100 miles per hour and a work ethic like none other, Nolan Ryan dominated hitters for an unparalleled 27 seasons on his way to 5,714 strikeouts, an all-time record. During four decades of prominence, he totaled 324 victories and a host of major league records. Most notable of his milestones are a mystifying seven no-hitters and 12 one-hitters. The eight-time All-Star fanned a single-season record 383 batters in 1973, and his career strikeouts encompassed 1,176 different players. Nolan Ryan is the only pitcher to strike out the side on nine pitched balls in both the National League (April 19, 1968) and the American League (July 9, 1972)

Ryan is truly a legend. A player who did legendary things for 3 separate organizations. Truly remarkable.

That being said, Bagwell and Biggio ARE the Houston Astros. They epitomize loyalty during a time when loyalty does not exist. They were/are rewarded handsomely for their efforts.

Is Nolan Ryan wearing a Houston Astros hat in the Hall of Fame? What hat will Biggio and/or Bagwell be wearing?

You can blame the Astros for that, not Ryan. You are sick.

But he could have if it wasnt for the Astros owner, so it does matter. Drexler didn't play for the Rockets that long and his carrer with the Rockets means more than Bagwell's with the Stros imo.

Delusional blind devotion to Bagwell. It's unhealthy.

Yeah, I really wish Bagwell would've walked off the field after being eliminated from the playoffs after a gutless effort with a ****-eating grin on his face.
