See The Flintstones, Family Guy, etc, etc, ad infinitum. Pretty much every American cartoon featured a fat white guy bumbling his way through life. Pretty much all of them have been shown in other countries.
Actually, I think he was making the point that in fighting not one, but two world wars and the Great Depression, people were more concerned with survival than what a cartoon may or may not mean. I can totally understand what you are saying though.
I cant speak for other families, but the mexican side of my family loves Speedy. The get a big kick out of the little mexican mouse that always makes the stupid cat look bad. I think they embrace him more cause its funny and he always comes out on top.
If Richie Rich is the best white stereotype you have to offer, then maybe it's just not that bad for you, and you don't know what some races go through that they can't "turn off".
It's hard to stereotype white people.. "white" in America today includes your Italians, Eastern European, Germans, Irish, Swedes, Native American descent, and for a lot of people even Jews - all of these ethnicities used to have their unique stereotypes but now it's all diluted mostly. What some ignorant minority members would call 'white behavior' simply might be 'educated' and/or a facet of Western culture i.e using New England as a template for how to dress (think Ralph Lauren), not spanking/slapping kids who are out of line, moving out of the house to far away cities upon HS graduation and remaining like that for life, etc.
Honestly, most comedies run down white males. Family Guy, Simpsons, King of the Hill, American Dad, King of Queens, Home Improvement, Everybody loves Raymond, Two and h alf Men, Friends, etc. etc. TV comedies have long played on the dopey, bumbling, lazy, insecure, etc. white man and the much more intelligent white woman. Even in commercials.
Ridiculous. This is no more racist than the depiction/stereotype of the smelly, lecherous, Frenchman that is Pepe le Pew that no one seems to mind.
Why is the Black Ranger black and the Yellow Ranger Oriental? They couldn't find an American Indian to be the Red Ranger? Oh wait, they made him the leader, so he had to be white.
