in the 100M, speedy...maybe even the 200M. After that, i think roadrunners long strides would be too much to overcome
That is hogwash sir! If you consider the aerodynamics implications of Roadrunner, he loses a lot of efficiency due to the large drag coefficient compared to that of Speedy's.
If you want to see what would qualify as a seriously, no-two-ways-about-it racist cartoon, google "Coal Black and The Sebben Dwarves", by Bob Clampett.
such a sensitive, PC world. it's a friggen cartoon created in the 1950's. Richie Rich offends me because it stereotypes upper class white people
uhh...sombrero??? plus, even with the extra drag, speedy would just have to expend far too much energy to compete step for step
I think it is racist but not something to get worked up over. Speedy Gonzales was created at a time when racial and ethnic stereotypes were quite common in mass media. For example Breakfast at Tiffany's Given the historical context of Speedy Gonzalez and if most Mexicans are not offended I don't think he is offensive but if someone created a character like Speedy Gonzalez now I think that would be much different.
I think the difference is that it is a child's cartoon as opposed to a film viewed by an adult audience. The child may not be able to filter their perceptions and understand it in historical context. It could potentially be their first exposure to Mexicans, and could lay the groundwork for a bigoted outlook.
Quite possible which is why I said it is racist but cartoons frequently play on broad stereotypes. Should we say that Yosemite Sam is offensive as it portrays a negative stereotype of Rednecks or Elmer Fudd for those with a lisp? As I said before I don't think its something to get worked up over and I think in regard to children I think its important to help them understand the historical context just as if you were watching The Song of the South with you kids.
I'm half Mexican. My mother is from Mexico City and came to the USA (legally). When I was a kid, I always enjoyed the Speedy Gonzalez cartoons and my mom never seemed to be offended by them. Do they qualify as being an ethnic stereotype? Probably. But I don't care. I'm not offended. People are too damned sensitive. I swear, if the people in today's society had grown up in the early 1900's, like during WWI or the great depression, they'd have a friggin' clue.
is this racist? <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/MvQP8njW9Q4&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/MvQP8njW9Q4&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

If you think Speedy Gonzales is bad, watch Coal Black and the 7 Dwarfs. It's one of the infamous "Cesnored 11" cartoons that were banned.
I think these guys show that its a different game when it originates here, or is shown here predominantly, etc. It would be interesting to see what the reception would've been to these characters had they started elsewhere.
this is pretty silly since yes there was some pretty bad racism in those days and don't act so tough because you can handle a speedy cartoon and you're mexican
