Yeah I agree he stands out there sometimes but I believe this specific play Green drove and pulled JJJ out with Amen going into this spot.
On Game Theory Podcast this weekend, Bryce Simon mentioned he saw a possession in which Amen was not respected, got the ball in a corner with defense conceding the three, and then Amen just drove. With getting a head of steam, Amen was just able to Eurostep around the flatfooted defender. Bryce compared this to how it is impossible to stop Giannis if Giannis gets a head of steam which has forced defenders to guard Giannis closer. Not sure how viable this is for Amen to spam, but this is potentially a way to attack a team every now and then if they don't respect Amen as a shooter.
It's so funny -- I was just thinking about this the other day. Was it this possession at :23? I'm just not sure "sagging" off Amen would be all that effective because all you're doing is permitting him more acceleration space.
I don't recall the exact details of the play that Bryce was describing, but that play fits the description though I thought he said corner. On stopping the sagging off, Amen has to attack it relentlessly and succeed to show that is not a valid strategy. I think it will work sometimes. Not sure how well it will work if team starts to expect it.
And at :37, the defender completely ignores him in the corner, and he just moves to the dunker spot and receives the alley oop.
Ok Does Rudy T play a part in this dasterly scheme? Horry playing a version of Sam Perkins? Or was it Kevin McHale in the Library with a clipboard all along?
