I think Joel Osteen should run and Oprah be his running mate.

That would calm the stock markets, cease the fighting in Iraq, bring Israel and Iran together as buddies and make the media drool whenever either of them holds a news conference.

Shame on McCain for choosing her without vetting her or shame on McCain for choosing her knowing how she is. OMG what a light weight.

Wasilla population growth since 1990 has averaged 4.2%. I'll estimate inflation in that time as a very conservative 2%. At a flat effective tax rate, the tax receipts would have increased 44%. Holding that to 33% is great.

All of the borrowed money were voted on in bond elections by the city. I would trust the citizens of Wasilla (at least the ones not blitzed out of their mind on meth) to better know whether the projects are worth it than me.

Another gem from that part 2 interview:

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/25/palin-on-bin-laden-such-a_n_129213.html

Besides being an incredibly incoherent run-on sentence...what? Women's rights? Tolerance?

We already had a thread on the email, rhad.

On the budget info...best I could do quickly was this quick link which says the population grew by 36% in the 90's and 55% in the first 5 years of the 2000's. So population growth may account for your % increase. (plus the numbers are so relatively low that percentages can be misleading), On the borrowed money, it went to voters who appoved it. A mayor presiding over a project that voters want, funded the way they approve seems a pretty decent reflection of a small town mayor doing a reasonable job as a small town mayor.

Besides....you already nailed her between the 'i's -- IMO. I don't get the zeal to besmurch her record as mayor or governor -- unless it's to compare it to the scope of what she might be called upon to do as president. (since 'president' is the subject of this thread).

EDIT -- Wes already addressed all the economic stuff. I think he's given this issue some thought.

But that don't excuse her sorryass performance with KC. Girl's got to learn to dodge, dance and BS better then that.

Fair enough. I'm glad to see it's not all malarky, but I still consider its one heck of a stretch to call her fiscally conservative.

For me, it was never really all that important anyhow (I think fiscal conservatism in america is dead, buried, and decomposed), I was more interested in how weslinder (and others) justified the label - that is important to me.

Your efforts to defend her are admirable. It's a thankless job that surely opens you up to ridicule. Keep up the good work.

Here's her answer about Afghanistan. She wants a surge...

COURIC: Why is it much more challenging there? Can you explain that?

PALIN: The logistics that we are already suggesting here, not having enough troops in the area right now. The... things like the terrain even in Afghanistan and that border between Pakistan and Afghanistan, where, you know, we believe that-- Bin Laden is-- is hiding out right now and... and is still such a leader of this terrorist movement. There... there are many more challenges there. So, again, I believe that... a surge in Afghanistan also will lead us to victory there as it has proven to have done in Iraq. And as I say, Katie, that we cannot afford to retreat, to withdraw in Iraq. That's not gonna get us any better off in Afghanistan either. And as our leaders are telling us in our military, we do need to ramp it up in Afghanistan, counting on our friends and allies to assist with us there because these terrorists who hate America, they hate what we stand for with the... the freedoms, the democracy, the... the women's rights, the tolerance, they hate what it is that we represent and our allies, too, and our friends, what they represent. If we were... were to allow a stronghold to be captured by these terrorists then the world is in even greater peril than it is today. We cannot afford to lose in Afghanistan.

It's several times worse when you watch the video. I know some folks here like her and I agree that she's a likable person when talking about hockey or hunting or something of that nature, but it scares the hell out of me to think about her becoming President. That's exactly what people should base their votes on... the very real possibility she could become President. I remember when JFK held the office and no one gave any thought to LBJ suddenly becoming President, either. He did.
