Very good rebounder, tenacious defender, good ball thief and a physical player over all. Almost every part of his game reminds me of Lowry.
Its too bad that Lowry guy was a selfish disrespectful locker room cancer. I would have him back though....
If Jeremy Lin wasn't Jeremy Lin and didn't have a gazillion fans, this would be a harmless comment that no one would even question. It's not an insult and who is "better" is pointless -- the main (and valid) point is that on nights when Lin isn't aggressive or effective, you're not losing much by turning to Beverley and in some areas you gain. That's why McHale is perfectly justified turning to Beverley for longer stretches on nights when he's giving the Rockets a spark.
Beverley is a really underrated shooter. That aside, the reason he's not starting over Lin is because he lacks the aggression / take-over and follow through that Lin has sometimes.
I'm personally not convinced that Beverley is that good (39+% from three) of a shooter... small sample size and time will tell. If he is, that's a damn good backup you can turn to as a fit next to James Harden, hitting the three strengths I think a point next to him should have: Top notch defender, Sure-handed (low turnovers), 40% three-point shooter. Definitely does not -- that's one area where Lin is stronger. It's why I agree with CH on the upside of Lin being higher. The problem is, on many nights, Lin doesn't have Lin's penetrating and finishing ability. The hope is he'll get more consistent as he gets more experience.
Defensively Beverly is better then Brooks plus he has had longer to meld with the team and its requirements of the PG surrendering the ball to Harden at a moment's notice. When it comes to offense, I can't say as I haven't seen Brooks go off, but I doubt it is the case given how streaky Beverly has been.
He doesn't have the offensive skills Lowry had. He's looked decent from 3 point range in a small sample size, but he doesn't seem to have many ways to score apart from outside the arc. I still think AB should be worked in the lineup somewhat with his offensive output. In nights where Harden is struggling Brooks could really take some of the load off.
Wow, when you aren't busy trolling the GARM with your PPat threads, you actually offer some insightful analysis. I have to agree on this one. I don't think Beverley is better than Lin, but there are times when his hustle and pressure defense really give us a much-needed spark. He also seems to have really nice handles while giving us a good combination of scoring, rebounding, assists, and defense from the PG position. In addition, he isn't nearly as bad of a shooter as some people might have you believe. I'm not sure if he would be able to keep up his production if given starting minutes, but he is definitely a great option off the bench. He certainly should be getting more PT than AB. However, I disagree on trading either of them. While I wouldn't be furious, I just don't think we should do it. I would really like to see these young players develop together instead of making of bunch of trades. Although I realize Morey will likely trade away half of the roster this offseason in a wild goose chase just to acquire another star. On a side note, Morey has done a really good job of finding NBA caliber PG's year after year. That seems to be a real strength of his...
It's been tossed around that Morey will trade one of the PG's (Lin or Beverley) and than roll with Brooks as the backup. Not sure who would go because their different strengths. Lin has a higher upside. Has more size, athleticism, scoring/passing. Defense isn't great one on one but can come up with a few steals. Highest cap hit. Beverley has been the definition of a hustle player. Pesky defender, crashes the boards. Decent spot up shooting but has a pretty slow release. Offense is definitely a weakness. Also, lowest cap hit. Brooks is the oldest and probably the best scorer. Doesn't penetrate as well as Lin but finishes smoothly and is the best shooter of the 3. Mid cap hit. If it's a keep 2 situation who would you guys roll with?
I am just amazed at Morey's ability to get quality PGs, when we sucked at that position for years after Francis was traded. DD
He's much better in the role the Rockets need him to play in. If Lin went down in injury, I actually wouldn't be shocked if they put Brooks in the starting lineup, and kept Beverly in the role is in now.
This is one the of best, simple descriptions of Lin that I have seen on here. Not surprising when considering the author of this statement... Coming into this season I wasn't exactly sure what to think of J Lin. Is he just a one-hit wonder? Overrated? Or does he truly have promising upside that the Rockets can tap into and develop? As the season has progressed, I've definitely started to lean towards the latter. He can be maddening to watch at times, but other nights he is damn near unstoppable out there... As you said, the hope is that he'll be more consistent over time and bring it every night. Hopefully he'll still be on the Rockets if/when that happens.
