that luthers/pappas on smith street taste like the same luthers it was before it was rebadged. i eat there often, waaaaaaaaaaay too often. for some reason, the pappas on san jacinto taste way better.
I liked thier chiliburgers when I was little. I don't really remember their bbq all that well. However, Pappa's meats just come off a little too soft/chewy for me. I typically like links at bbq places, and Pappa's just isn't that good. I would much prefer Rudy's or somewhere else.
Pappas BBQ is absolutely horrible. I've been there a couple of times and had it again yesterday because they catered a work event. It is really terrible. Rudy's meat and sauce are pretty freaking tough to beat but their sides are pretty bad. Regardless, I'll go just because the meat and sauce are awesome. My favorite BBQ place in the whole wide world is Joel's in Flatonia, TX. We stop there everytime we go that way. I love me some Joel's.
I used to love Goode Co, but their portions have gone from decent to miniscule in the past few years. The quality is still good, though. I think the brisket at Luling City is some of the best I've ever had. Really moist and tasty. Plus the mustard sauce is unique to this area. However, I didn't really like the ribs and I hated the sausage. I also like the pulled pork sandwiches at Lyndon's. Their sauce is more Carolina style, but it works for me just fine. The brisket, chicken and sausage at Thelma's is pretty good and the portions are huge (EDIT: I had to change my original wording of this sentence - it made me cringe). My dad really likes Pizzatola's. I went there once and thought it was OK. Portions were kinda small.
If you want BBQ, fly to KC or Memphis. This stuff down here ain't even in the ballpark. All that said, Rudy's can't get here fast enough. They're the best by far of a very weak BBQ class in H-Town.
This has changed now. Hill Country BBQ in NYC is better than anything in Houston. Houston BBQ is horrid.
BBQ is my favorite thing next to Tex-Mex. Here are my favorite places: Goode Co. BBQ (59/Kirby) Mikeska's (El Campo and Brenham) Rendezvous (Memphis, TN) Southside Market (Elgin, TX)
you've apparently never been to cooper's in llano. i will agree that there isn't a real top-notch bbq joint in houston... at least not one that i've been to. i keep hearing about thelma's and burn's, so i'm gonna have to check those out. i do like luling city market on richmond, although it doesn't hold a candle to the original in luling.
So per b4-u-eat.com, Williams Smokehouse has closed down? Damn shame, best restaurant-bought ribs I've ever had. Did they move or something?
burned up. They aren't rebuilding Hello burns I'm looking at you. Williams had the best BBQ in houston. best ribs by far Coopers in Llano is the best in the state with the original Luling coming in second.
Agreed. Nothing like going to Coopers, walking up to the pit and pointing out a massive chunk of brisket, and having the guy throw it on your tray with all the sauce you want. Man, now I'm wanting to go today! We'll probably make a trip out there during March Madness. It's probably an hour or so drive from where we live.
Where do you live? We have a place up around San Saba & Cooper's is our lunch stop on trips to & fro. Their sirloin & pork chops would be my favorite, but outside of 1 way too salty pork chop ("Who's in charge of salting this?" asks my granddad; "We all kinda are" says the pit guy; "I believe it.") I've never had a bad piece of any meat there.
