Morey may be waiting also to see which team is going to have the worst season of the bunch offering. I think if Morey plays it right he may be able to get a top 5 draft pick out of the trade in addition to a rotation player who is young but already showing big promise and fits well with the team. I hope this is what happens by the trade deadline.

I know. What hadn't been pointed out, is that McGrady, can now net another team $6 million cash. This opportunity lasts only until the end of pre-season.

We will have to take back a fair amount of junk for it.

That mightn't be such a bad situation. The Rockets are around $4.4M (less if Barry is bought out) over the LT. This could be another way for them to get under the tax, ie trade for some junk/huge contracts who have agreed to be bought out.

while his $22MM price tag doesn't come off the books until the end of year, a team would only pay out of pocket the remaining pro-ration of that amount.

so...if we were to trade McGrady at the deadline, whatever team picks him up would be responsible for less than $11MM of his remaining contract, while showing the full amount coming off of their books.

the closer we get to the deadline, the more valuable Tracy becomes.

sure, let's trade TMac for KG while we are at it. :D both with careers going down the hill. at least, KG could help out the front court once he gets healthy. :D

The other team doesn't save $11M. The $22M worth of players packaged for McGrady would've been paid $11M for the first half of the season. So if they take on McGrady's remaining $11M, they still end up paying $22M in total.

Another team salary dumping been covered countless times.

What's new and different is that a pre-season trade does all of the above but could possibly include $6 million cash for the team who trades for McGrady.

This is very true. And people make the mistake of talking about how teams won't trade for him because he's washed up and such. (Those dudes on Sports 610 and their callers need a little more imagination.)

If traded, McGrady will be joined by some of our low-money guys, especially if we take back anyone of real value. Good luck with that, I know; I'm talking a Caron Butler, an Amar'e Stoudemire, etc.

There isn't as many people ready to clear money off as some think and then its not like the rockets aren't the only ones.

Cleveland has Big Z, Chicago has Miller and James, Clipps has camby, Miami has O'neal who is a similar situation as the rox except J.O. has been playing lately. Just like when they were going to prey on teams struggling, there are contenders this yr that can make a move and get better before the rockets and trying to use mcgrady's contract.

I think if the Rockets trade McGrady, unless it's for a true young star player, it will be for LESS incoming salaries (albeit some longer contracts). Therefore, given those parameters, it would be more likely that the other team would want to make that move closer to the February trade deadline in order to minimize the amount actual additional salary owed from February through April.

There will be teams ready to clear money of their books come mid-season when they realize they are not playoff teams.

They don't have Morey as a GM and none of those guys except for O'Neal make near what McGrady makes. There are not many players out there that can give so much relief.

In any scenario no team will give just what the Rockers are looking for either, they will have to soak it up. I can see a third team getting involved most specifically Indiana and Phoenix.

Or Keep McGrady and trade all the youth and expiring contracts for 2 Garnett lite moves and bring in Josh Smith and Michael Redd along with 2 first round picks 2010 and with a sub-par season have 3 top 20 picks, trade 2 of them off for a top 10, resign McGrady and extend Yao and Redd and fill the rest with MLE, LLE, picks, free agents and then suddenly the championship door opens up for another 3-4 years. Get it done Morey !! We would blow the Lakers and Celtics off the floor.

I think you're mmissing the point big time and if all you have is "they don't have morey as gm" then your in for a rude awakening. Oneal makes a bit less than tracy, but its barely 1m maybe. What i'm really talking about is teams wanting to clear salary without gutting a team. Its easier to get +/- 25% of big z,miller and james, and camby than it is 25% of 23m. There isn't a deal that cleveland or chicago couldn't trump dealing with mcgrady and another team. Why? See above. Here is a example:

Lets us Amare for instance. First, I don't think amare is going anywhere, but lets say he is availible. Chicago can offer Tyrus Thomas, Brad Miller, and Jerome James or Miller, deng, and thomas for Amare and Richardson. Is a mcgrady package going to beat that? Clevland can offer Big Z and a young like hickson for amare. I don't think teams will just take tracy to clear salary without getting back a young cheap player especially when there will be option galore through the league.

    McGrady ($3M insurance money) + Taylor + $3M ($6M cash total) → C.Lee + Simmons + Battie + Hassell
    $23,568,124 for $23,463,706
*Oct 27 (Season opens) to Nov 23rd (MRI) = $3 million insurance
    *Nets save $6 million

Buyout Simmons, Battie, Hassell for at least $1.2M less than they are owed
Plus buyout Barry for $1M less than what he's owed = Team salary reduced by $4.6M, Rockets under LT

Alternatively, trade Simmons to the Knicks for Mobley
    *Rockets save $1,742,666
*Rockets collect around $7.6M of insurance money
    *Mobley retires as a Rocket
    *Knicks get more depth
*Help the Knicks to get out of the lottery, help ruin the Jazz's draft pick.

Keep Battie, try to trade Dorsey to the Blazers (under cap) for the rights to Patty Mills.
Mills wants a NBA contract instead of signing in Europe. He's currently recovering from a broken foot. With Miller, Blake, and Bayless already on their roster the Blazers don't need another PG.
