LOL - you guys are sooooo funny..... Yes I did watch, and I liked how he slid in the pocket to avoid some pressure, but KC rarely put a lot of pressure on him...and rarely rushed more than 4 players. I am talking about how quickly he gets rattled against blitzing teams.....at least I notice it. I appreciate you guys rushing to his defense, he is a good QB...sort of reminds me of Pastarini without the arm....but a better touch. But keep on thinking like you do....it is what fandom is all about...I can appreciate that you guys love the guy.... And I am coming around...I like him, just don't think he is top tier.....just a step below. DD
DD, how many quarterback have a better pocket presence or pocket awareness than Schaub? They can literally be counted on a single hand, probably without using all the fingers
I think he has pretty good awareness, when he is facing a mediocre rush, he struggles when he has to make quick decisions, and locks into receivers in that situation. Great QBs will recognize the blitz and make the throw where the blitz is coming from before the receiver makes the break. I don't see Schaub taking advantage of that, or beating the blitz as often as he should with AJ as his top dog. Just my .02....I really do think he is a good QB, just not a great one....but he is way better than Carr, and has proven to be danged good..... I think we all watch games with our own bias based upon our own experiences playing or coaching or watching the game.....that is just how I see it.... DD
Yeah, he doesn't take advantage, maybe he would set the record for single season passing yards instead of only throwing for the 6th most all time if he did that I really don't understand how you watch him and get that observation. His decision making and inability to be rattled is one of his STRENGTHS. Your analysis simply does not make any sense.
I agree with you here, and noted it as one of my weaknesses he needs to improve on. But this isn't pocket presence or pocket awareness. This is scheme and defensive set-up recognition pre-snap. This is what makes Peyton so good. Of course it helps that he's played with a lot of the same offensive lineman and offensive coaches throughout his career, but Peyton is no doubt great at it. I'm not sure Schaub has the green light from the coaching staff to make as many pre-snap adjustments, but he will occasionally. Still, I agreed that whether against the blitz, or any appropriate defensive scheme, the offense could use some more super quick drop passes. It just doesn't seem to be in the playbook at the moment. But it's not pocket presence, awareness, clutchness or being frazzled under pressure. No QB will have regular success with 5 step drops when being blitzed by a scheme that not everyone is blocked. It's just not possible.
This is completely reasonable, and it's where I stand on Schaub, too. He's just below the elite of the elite (Manning, Brady, Brees, et. al.). I don't agree with the whole "rattled" sentiment, as he doesn't *look* rattled and the stats certainly would argue against that. But still, if you say he's excellent but not super-elite, I don't think there's much of an argument there. --------------------------------------------------------------- I think the "starting point" or "point of reference" is an interesting thing to consider when watching folks discuss Schaub. For some, the frame of reference is the Texans' brief and beleaguered history at QB, and Schaub is simply awesome! For others, a great QB is Peyton Manning. So he may be very, very good, but we're going to get overly excited about QB who's doing simply what an NFL QB is *supposed* to do.
You know, despite the loss, I think we shouldn't overlook who was clutch as hell yet again in the 4th quarter. Houston Texans at 06:09 1-10-HOU 27 (6:09) (Shotgun) 8-M.Schaub pass short right to 83-K.Walter to HST 30 for 3 yards (30-D.Coleman). 2-7-HOU 30 (5:27) 8-M.Schaub pass deep right to 89-D.Anderson pushed ob at NYJ 35 for 35 yards (36-J.Leonhard). 1-10-NYJ 35 (5:01) 8-M.Schaub pass deep left to 80-A.Johnson to NYJ 15 for 20 yards (24-D.Revis). 1-10-NYJ 15 (4:23) 8-M.Schaub pass short right to 23-A.Foster to NYJ 11 for 4 yards (58-B.Thomas). 2-6-NYJ 11 (3:46) 23-A.Foster right tackle to NYJ 2 for 9 yards (36-J.Leonhard). 1-2-NYJ 2 (3:05) 23-A.Foster right guard to NYJ 1 for 1 yard (70-M.Devito; 78-W.Hunter). 2-1-NYJ 1 (2:24) 23-A.Foster left guard for 1 yard, TOUCHDOWN. New York Jets challenged the runner broke the plane ruling, and the play was Upheld. (Timeout #1 at 02:18.) 4-N.Rackers extra point is GOOD, Center-46-J.Weeks, Holder-1-M.Turk. HST 24 NYJ 23 Plays: 7 Possession: 3:51 New York Jets at 02:18
The defense has really let down the offense this year. Schaub engineered his SECOND 4th quarter comeback in as many weeks, only to see the defense give up long bombs.
Hell, don't forget about the Chargers game. Driving down to win it, and a fluke interception that wasn't his fault. Poor Matt.
good point. this guy routinely puts his team in a position to win late in games. It's pretty impressive.
It's funny because if you look at his stats, they aren't even bad at all. He is one great passing game away from being top 5 in total passing yards and YPG while only throwing 7 picks, same as Manning and less then Rodgers or Rivers. He has had a couple of BAD games but mostly he has been very good this season, he just set the bar REALLY high last year.
