I pray to god manziel isn't being considered. Sumlin will replace manziel with another QB next year that will put up stats bc thats what he does. Probably will not be as dynamic, but will have success.
Stats don't mean anything. Being good is what matters. Jason White shredded through defenses and had no chance in the NFL at any point. Rhett Bomar kind of sucks at OU, winds up in D2, then at least gets a shot in the NFL. Manziel is more than a system guy. Same goes for RG3.
I dont get all this talk about Manziel just throwing it up in the air...out of that whole clip, there were only a couple instances where he did that. It's not like NFL QBs dont do that. One of the highest paid NFL QBs gets a handful of touchdowns like that every year...Stafford to Megatron. Watch a Lions game and you'll see handfuls of plays every game where he just chucks it and hopes Calvin comes down with the ball. However, it's by design...just like many of us wanted Schaub or Keenum to just chuck it up to Hopkins. When you have a mismatch, throw a jump ball and rely on your receiver to come down with the ball. Had Schaub had the ability, Andre Johnson would have about 15 TDs added to his career total. It looks like it takes no skill, but you still have to put it in position for your WR to come down with the ball. If that was all Manziel could do, then yes, knock him for those lobs...but when there is a whole highlight reel of him and only a few plays show those toss ups, then that's hardly proving any point other than the fact that his game is diverse.
I was never a fan of Manziel's "build"... but he does possess instincts that are off the charts. You can train any QB to follow a pattern/system/change plays at the line/recognize defenses... etc. Things like thinking on the fly/pocket awareness/making something happen out of nothing are not trainable. What's yet to be determined is whether or not those "traits" Manziel has will translate to the NFL (it didn't happen for Vince or Tebow)... but I would not say having those crazy-good instincts is a "slight" to him at all.

I was working NYE so I missed the Duke game. But I taped it and watched it last night. There are 2 things that concern me. 1) He throws flat footed a lot (not all the time), not stepping into throws, pretty much using only his upper body to throw the ball. Impressive that he has enough arm strength to allow him to do that, but it's not the best technique. 2) He sometimes runs backwards to escape pressure. We saw with Case this year that that was something he was able to do in college that he wasn't able to do in the NFL. I'm afraid that these are things he can get away with in college that won't fly in the NFL. Things that a coach will have to change.
The INTs scare me. He had 13 this year including 4 games with more than 1. A lot of them were just dumb throws that should have been thrown away. Bridgewater. on the other hand, only had 4 all year and no games with more than 1.
Agreed 100%. But he's also good stepping up in the pocket and around oncoming defenders. So it's not fair to say he cant eliminate that from his game. Perhaps he's just getting the most out of the opportunity available. His ability to see and feel pressure and still scan the field is insane.
I know that's where it stands now, but you never know what the combine will bring... Stock will rise and fall for all QBs. I'm still *hoping* that he will slip for some reason and we can get him in the teens after trading down.
Again this all comes back to level of competition . I'd be surprised if Teddy faced more than one db all year that will play a single snap in the nfl . .. but yea manziel is in no way perfect and will need to work hard to improve his game for the next level .
I'd venture to say that most of Manziel's interceptions were more of him throwing into a bad spot or forcing a throw then the opposing DBs making incredible plays.
A&M has the better O-line by far, better receivers and better offensive system for a QB compared to bridgewater. Lets not over think this and get cute just grab teddy and keep it moving.
This can't be said for sure and that's my biggest hesitation on Manziel. Looking at the QBs under the Briles/Sumlin system, none of them have panned out. Kolb was considered a pretty good NFL prospect and never maintained a starting job. Keenum, even though undrafted, got a chance and hasn't show an ability to read/identify defenses at the NFL level. RG3 was the best NFL prospect from the system and he regressed a lot this year. Grant it there are a lot of problems with the Redskins but since a lot of folks had Luck and RG3 as 1A and 1B prospects, it is notable that Luck is progressing much better. I'm trying to find QBs that have succeeded in the NFL after coming from a "system offense" and can't find anyone noteworthy. Not saying that Manziel won't succeed but its a factor IMO.
"System" is BS terminology, but Steve Young, McMahon were good. Randomly picked 2 guys. There are plenty. Need a recent guy? Cam Newton. Alex Smith is looking pretty good too. Again, there are plenty. And I'm sure Manziel buying time in the pocket and completing throws to parts of the field that are normally off limits after a play breaks down are all part of Sumlin's scheme. "System" QB's that suck in the NFL are generally forecasted to suck in the NFL. White, every Tech QB, Keenum, Chang, Crouch, etc... nobody ever says, holy ****, look at those stats, definitely NFL material. That's why Keenum went undrafted. Because he didn't have much going for him. If anything, bringing up Kolb is more of an indictment on Bridgewater - seemingly good tools, crappy teammates, crappy competition and lack of wins.
