20-25 thats kinda broad lol. I don't think Wall is on a Brandon Roy trajectory. On the physical peak, I think A_3PO hit the prime age mark. I know in baseball age 27 is generally considered the "peak". In NBA, a player's 3rd year is generally their "breakout", and age 27-28 is generally the "performance prime" which is skills + physicality. This is Wall's 3rd year and he's certainly broke out. Wall might fit the bill more than flameout I think. Gives him another 3-4 years until any noticeable physical decline. (Worth the max, probably not he has holes in his game and doesnt have the accomplishments of the other lead PGS. But we already know the max is an artificially low number anyway. And Washington might have no choice but to overpay him to stay relevant)
To clarify, I am NOT arguing John Wall is worth a max contract. My point is that worrying he will decline athletically by age 27 as a reason to not give him one is complete nonsense. Using the nutty logic NBA players hit their peak physically from 20-25, every player eligible for a max contract is likely to decline. Give me a break. My concern has to do with his productivity. What he's done the last 3 weeks is impressive, but it's been garbage time in Washington for a while. Less than one month's production for a trash team playing meaningless games doesn't prove he can sustain it over the course of 6 months/82 games. Granted I don't follow him much at all, but Wall doesn't strike me as a guy who is first-in, last-out at daily practice/shootaround or is a tireless worker who pushes himself to the limit in the offseason. There are at least 1 or 2 Wizards fans here on the forum. I'd like them to correct my impression if it's wrong (or verify). How dedicated and hard-working was he the first couple of years? Said it earlier and will repeat: I don't trust John Wall. Wizards should not give him the max this summer. They should wait until 2014. If he blows it up from beginning to end and carries them to a playoff berth next year, dump the money on him.
See what I mean? Another athletic slasher struck down by injury. Also to clarify, I meant that Wall's athleticism will definitely fade over time but what isn't for sure is whether he stays injury-free (already has had knee issues) and develops better shooting (poor FG% his whole career but a bit better this year) and defense (not that great). To me a max worthy player is a full package guy, not a project full of potential. Just my opinion, however crappy.
He probably could but we'd still have the same problem we have with Lin, no true floor spacing yet a slight improvement on defense. The Wiz's wouldn't let him go anyway, whether they like it or not he is the face of their franchsie until Bradley Beal reaches his true potential. Too bad for them.
I know it would never happen but if I'm the Wizards I'm trading Wall for first round draft picks in next years draft. I think other teams see the potential too.
Wall really turned it on last year and it appears that he has figured it out. He is very young (not yet 23). If the Wizards do not give him the max (remember max for a player right after his rookie contract is less than max for a more experienced player) someone else will.
You guys are nuts if you don't think he's worth a max. He's 22 and he has Derrick Rose potential. If he ever establishes a jumpshot he's going to be a superstar.
Funny. One could say you are "nuts" for thinking a guy that dominated for 2 months over 3 seasons should get a max contract. Not only that, the games he dominated meant absolutely nothing to anyone. It was garbage time and may as well have been preseason. Let John Wall play a full healthy season, bring it each and every night, put up numbers, lead his team to 45 wins and terrify whoever they play in the 1st round in a losing effort. Then we can legitimately start comparing him to Rose and other guys who clearly deserved max extensions. Unfortunately for them, the Wizards are stuck with betting their franchise on this guy. Not a good position to be in.
Wall will probably get the max since the Wizards have no choice. But as of now, I don't believe he's worth it. Exactly.
Is Kyrie Irving worth the max? I'd rather give Wall the max than Kyrie. I realize Kyrie is the popular choice but he hasn't shown he can be a winner. Wall on the other hand proved that he can lead the Wiz when he came back in the second half of the season last year.
