The NBA is smaller than it used to be, and very few "tall" centers dominate the middle like the old days.........

Joey is a perfect uptempo back-up center.....

His FT shooting is excellent. What he needs to work on is his dunking and flexing after dunking.

Seriously, I hope he becomes the next Ben Wallace. Everything about his body and his game say that this is a real possibility.

I think Deke should be allowed to play at least 10 minutes a game backing up Yao. This will keep him in game shape. It is even harder for him to not play most of the season and then have to step in and play in game shape when an injury occurs. Even at his age, he is still one of the best backup centers in the league.

Deke playing 10 minutes a game will bring Yao's potential minutes down to 38 per game. That means that some only have to put in another 6 to 8 minutes of play per game to get Yao down to the ideal 30 to 32 minutes per game to keep him healthy and fresh for the playoffs. I would prefer if we got a legit 7 footer with potential like the dude from Iran to back up Yao for those minutes of more of Mutumbo's minutes, but I think if we don't, Adelman can find time to give Dorsey those minutes in the right situations.

What I hope we don't do, is to play Scola out of position at backup center and limit his effectiveness at power forward doing so!

I think After Yao comes out Adleman will just put 2 bigs out there.

Offensively i don't see anyone playing as a true center and defensively i would expect it to depend heavily on the matchups. I could see Scola and Dorsey out there together with Dorsey d-ing up the Center and Scola doing the bulk of the scoring in the post.

Now if Yao gets injured for a long stretch again we would need another true center, whether that be Deke or a new comer. We'll see what happens, talent and skill is way more important than simple size.

i agree, but ben wallace had a much tougher road to the nba which made him work his butt off to improve and stay on the court. will joey have the same dedication to improving?

Sorry but just looking at this list alone I see quite a few weak and old players for back ups (quite a few but still a few as well that might prove a problem). But still, while giving up a couple inches for someone who weighs the same (can hold his own in the post) just as strong if not stronger then a lot of these names and definitely has higher hops then a lot of these names. Its just not enough to make think for the 5-6 minutes (if he does play back up) in a game that it will go terribly hay wire wrong for us.

Lol, sorry for got to add that if someone of Booths or Armstrong or Swift or Araujo (etc etc) caliber turns the game into their favor in those short minutes then damn maybe its not just the back up center thats a problem.

    A little off-topic:

However, imagine if the Rockets training staff can increase Joey's vertical like they did Landry's. I would love to see Joey and Landry set a double pick-and-rolls at the top of the 3-point line for T-Mac. It would be a dunk-fest. Like this: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/343086/dunk_fest/

genuine problem. Deke isn't a garbage time nor full time backup. Really, outside tune up duty or injury, he shouldn't be on the court much regular season. Guess we'll see Rick's take soon enough.

Did Deke even come off the bench last year until Yao went down? If he did, I don't remember it.

Only Yao, O'Neal, Bynum have gotten more than 10 pts. The backup center doesn't have to be an all-star to stop the rest of those guys from scoring, but he better be a damn good rebounder. The best rebounder of the bunch is Wallace, who is 6'7" maybe 6'8". He'll be lucky to be 6'10" in 3 inch pumps.

In the first 56 games last season before Yao went down, Deke played a grand total of 110 minutes in 13 games. Hope that clears up the idea that he's the backup center. Outside of practice and locker-room influence, Deke's role on the team is to play about every 4th game and sit tight until the playoffs.

Most of those guys are so bad that they won't even come off the bench. Alot of those teams just bring in another PF to play at center. The backup C coming in for only limited possesions like end of game situation to grab a rebound or to play Hack a Yao. Once Yao sits, those guys will be benched for a PF.
