Also, just wanted to point out that the whole "Asian marketing bonanza" angle is very frequently just assumed to be true whenever Asian players go to European soccer leagues. Fans of some thatched-roof shanty village in England think that those hordes of Asians will suddenly start buying every single shirt from Thatched-Roof Shanty Village FC because, you know, those Asians are lemming-like in that way. It's pretty condescending and irritating, especially when those Asian players are actually pretty talented and their Asian fans wouldn't just mindlessly buy merchandise unless those players were, you know, kind of good and got some meaningful playing time.

Yea I hate when I see that it so dumb... the only way a player brings money in directly to his team is through ticket sales and team endorsements.

I read some where a while ago that Yao Ming, brought in around 800k-1.2 million extra a year to the Rockets... and that was Yao Ming! His value is more toward the entire league not his individual team.

Its like not like leagues outside the states where teams actually own the players rights here the leagues NBA, MLB, NFL own the rights to the players.

Not sure about the Rockets but the NBA is estimated to have a record breaking revenue year. Up $5 billion or 20% primarily due to increased sales in China. Not sure if Lin has anything to do with that though.

    http://www.nba.com/2012/news/11/13/stern-nba-revenue.ap/index.html

A percentage of a team's revenue goes to a fund pool which is then equally distributed back to the teams. So the Rockets do profit if Lin generates extra sales. You can read about revenue sharing it here:

I dunno, I heard Yi Jianlian jerseys sold like wildfire, made the Mavs billions of dollars.

thats impossible because iirc team only get half the money from those sales and the other half goes to the players in equal parts.

Don't you think if he made them billions a team would sign him... the Mavs aren't even worth a billion dollars...

    You're quick to catch on.

And just to add to this thread, the last 3 pgs the rockets have had played far better and were discarded easier. If you think there is no way the rockets would let him go just look at the history.

Now If NBA goes the international route and sell ad space on jersey's I think they would benefit greatly, MLS did it maybe 3-4 years ago but idk how much that increased profit.

4 if you count Rafer, Rockets treat PG's like trading cards... I like Lin a lot, hell I liked all of the PG's except for Rafer, but he has good trade value imo and finding pg's seem to be easy...

We just won't know if he is the pg of the future one thing for sure, If Morey comes out and says "Lin is our PG of the future" then Lin is gone. lol

He said that about both Brooks & Lowry.

He got a lottery pick for Lowry though. And he probably said that about Lowry before the whole Lowry-McHale debacle.

No I wish, but I don't think they release that stuff. I have heard that it's grown for the entire league greatly both inside the US and in all the countries they broadcast too.

Only thing they release which should be soon are the top 15 player jersey's and top 10 team jersey's for both domestic sales and international sales.

Rockets haven't made either list in a while iirc, well since McGrady/Yao.

He better be playing like a borderline all star in the next year or 2 if he wants to be part of our future. He needs to tighten up those loose handles, make smarter decisions, actually be a viable 1 vs 1 option, improve his jumpers and play smarter defense.

Not too long I wanted Yi & Okafor on the Rockets... just so I could squint my eyes and pretend I was watching two of my favorite players Olajuwon & Yao :(

I still would love Okafor if he wasn't so expensive, maybe Morey can get him next year on a "home team" discount.

    Thanks.

I found this April 29th article "Jeremy Lin's Presence in the NBA Playoffs Boost Viewership and Merchandise Sales in China" that talks about video streams (NBA.TV) increasing by 2 billion (that's @ $170 for league pass?) but again it talks about the league in general and not specifically the Rockets.

That's awesome, with all the growth maybe the Rockets can finally re-brand so people will want to buy some Rockets jersey's... These jersey's are so ugly there is a reason why people quit buying them after Yao/T-Mac left.

In regards to the broadcasting rights/profits I think its like the jersey's the NBA league office does it as a whole, so each team doesn't actually negotiate broadcasting deals. If that is what you are talking about.

I can see the video streams being very popular just because you can your choice of what to watch. My friend was in China for a few weeks during fall and he thought the Rockets weren't as popular because instead of airing a Houston game they had a Celtics game on or something. Must of been BOS/LAL or something, idk I didn't really ask him about it.

Funny thing about that article is there are 30 new NBA stores opening in Taiwan and I know China has the most stores but here in the US there is only the one NBA store in NY.

Yeah the NBA on TV here only shows the game of the big games so Rockets are hardly on.

So I got NBA international league pass. I've watched every game this season.
Now, I got interested in Howard, so its cool I can go back and watch Lakers games to see how he plays. I think the on demand league pass thing is a massive hit outside the U.S.

No surprise the league's worldwide revenues are soaring.

Exactly good point! With the GM we have you just never know. His main focus is to get better and he will do anything to get better. I am happy that it finally looks like we have a direction.

Source? You do realize how many jerseys you'd have to sell to make not a billion, but BILLIONS of dollars?

With that kind of profit, the Mavs could simply ignore the luxury tax for the next century.
