simple question: have the Rockets gotten closer to a ring with Rick Adelman or with Jeff Van Gundy?

The more games we play without Ariza and/or Battier, the more our defense will stink - its that simple. We were missing our two best defenders and it showed...

Don't mind me... I'm emotional after the string of losses... I love Rick, and I know we will be good to go in the end...

The defensive intensity needs to rise, though...

It's not the coach, it's the players.

Some of them are amazingly bad on defense and there is nothing anyone (Adelman, Yao, Battier, or JVG) could do to help them.

We had Yao, T-Mac and no one else. Those two weren't as injury prone though. We had no supporting cast at all.

A few years ago. He has been walking around as a zombie since then.

We also had better players under Adelman then when JVG was here. A part of me will always wish we never got rid of the guy everytime we throw a game against a lottery team. After Tom Thib was able to create a D that didn't interfere with the Celt's O...surely JVG's system isn't that different?

Add to that a lack of Lowry. Lowry is a much better defender on guards like Williams. That would have helped slow them down a bit.

I don't miss the JVG years.
Adelman doesn't have T-Mac or Yao for the most of the season.

JVG was in a similiar situation in 2005-06, but Yao and T-Mac actually played 104 combined games. Despite having Yao and T-Mac for two-thirds of the season, he managed a 34-48(0.415) losing record vs Adelman's current winning record (0.500) without T-Mac, Yao, Mutombo. There are still people that believe that JVG would have done better than Adelman this season, without Yao, Mutombo and McGrady for the whole season. This is not including the current loss of Ariza, Battier, and Lowry.

Maybe it would best to have JVG coach without T-Mac and Yao for the whole season. Our offense-less and defense-less team could post a worse record than 34-48 and get a higher draft pick than Rudy Gay.

Man how I wish we had JVG now. We would be headed for a top lotto pick. Yes JVG team would play slightly better D. No question in my mind. He knows how to coach swarming D but he doesn't know offense. Hence the better lotto pick.

I hope Rick takes the Portland job so we can hire JVG.

RA with morey > jvg with dawson

jvg with morey > RA with morey

for all you saying RA takes us further than jvg, morey has something to do with that. If jvg had artest, landry, brooks, yao we would have beaten the soft lakers.

jvg = best coach not named Phil Jackson

this team has zero defensive intensity, it left with artest, either bring back artest,or bring in a coach that stresses D. you cant win a ring without D. no team has ever . thats why RA's kings always lost in playoffs, and why Ra's trailblazers lost and why suns cant win . Boring teams like spurs do,and tall teams like lakers do.

come to think of it, its either bosh or bust this summer

whatever. D wins championships. both jvg and RA make the mistake of not tanking. we missed out on roy because of jvg now for some reason RA rolled the spurs even though the playoffs are a dreamcast

He had Yao(57 games)/Mutombo/Hayes(3rd option) and Juwan/Hayes at the C and PF, while Adelman has Hayes(1st)/Andersen and Scola/Jeffries at C and PF.

JVG's frontline was much stronger at C. While Juwan is not as good as Scola, is not a huge downgrade offensive and defensively.

Adelman was left with using JVG's 3rd option at C, and using David Andersen as the 2nd option. DA would have undoubtedly have been he 4th option in JVG's time behind Yao, Mutombo, and Hayes. While Scola is a slight upgrade at PF over Juwan. Jeffries is a downgrade compared to Hayes, with less rebounding, less experience playing for the Rockets, and weaker defense. However, having 2 all-star defensive centers man the frontline tips it in JVG's favor for having the better lineup.

Jeff Van Gundy's teams lost in the first round.

I will take more offense and a little less defense for the win please.

No doubt our defense would rule if we still had JVG and T-bo. However I'm not sure we would be doing much better, record wise, under those two with the same personnel we have now.

For one thing, I know I disliked JVG's offense... and that was with MerGady who was supposedly among one of the more exciting players to watch back then. Imagine how it would be now with this current superstar-less roster.

    JVG rolling in his grave?

Let's hope so. The Rockets are finally changing the offensive deficient type of players he brought in.
