Been wondering about this lately. The guy just does great acting work in almost everything. Nightcrawler and Southpaw lately.

Any others feel the same or are there other actors out there that you feel are equally or more underrated and deserve more recognition?

He's considered above average, so I'd say he's fairly rated.

I don't know if he is underrated, but he is one of the most versatile actors out right now. Like Leo, I usually enjoy a Gyllenhaal movie.

I was just going to say, Leo might be up there as one of the most underrated as well.

I kind of feel like Leo is doing a lot of similar character types in every movie...

But as I went to his IMDB page I was surprised by two things:

    1. He's been really selective and just isn't in a lot overall. About 9 movies over the last 9 years

    2. There is enough nuance in his characters to not "character-type" him quite as much as I did above.

Very good point right there, that's something else I feel Gyllenhaal is. Very versatile as an actor and doesn't seem like he is acting the same role in every movie.

As far as versatility I gotta go Will Smith:

    Bad Boys 1-4
    Men in Black 1-3
    Hancock
    I Am Legend
    Hitch
    I, Robot
    Wild Wild West
    Independence Day

My favorite one of these films was the one where he was kind of the outwardly tough guy, but he actually had a personal issue that he needed to deal with plus a heart of gold.

He's an excellent actor. His role choices show he's more interested in being challenged artistically than just putting out crap. I rate him pretty highly.

Not a fan of most of his movies, so FIFY.

Nightcrawler was well played, tho. I'll have to check out Southpaw when it's good for streaming.
