Weinhauer became the VP of the bucks, not asst. coach. Kohl paid him a boatload. that's why he left. Also, if rudy was such a good 'gm' in the early years, why did he allofasudden become completely crazy when it came to signing players (maloney, cato, turksan, drew, price, motaylor). Rudy played a major role, but he also had major help in 93 and 94. Once that help left, things started falling apart.
Rudy did not want to become head coach after Cheaney got fired. He and Carroll Dawson mutually agreed Rudy would become head coach as Dawson had health issues-see chronicle article. Rudy's legacy should be that he succeeded in winning two championships - the first against 3 teams that were loaded with more talent. Rudy was masterful at preparing players with fragile egos for big games. He was a good motivator. He exploited matchups against the Spurs and Suns like a magician.
Incorrect, Weinhauer went to the Bucks as an assistant coach under Chris Ford in the summer of 1996. In 1997 Mike Dunleavy left as VP of Operations, he already was relieved as coach a year before. After looking at some higher profile candidates, the Bucks named Weinhauer GM on July 16, 1997. Sidenote: he was the GM when the Bucks traded the draft rights of Nowitzki for Robert Traylor, probably that costed his job, although Mike Woodson (who was an assistant coach at the time) was pushing for Tractor. I don't know how Rudy got so bad in scouting players, it was his bread and butter. His crowning acheivements were Cassell, Horry, Elie, and Drexler. After that, he began missing more then hitting. I think Rudy spent more time bandaiding a team around Dream who was slowly showing his age after the championship years then building it up again through the draft....then again, his drafts for the most part stunk after the glory years. Michael Dickerson, Cat, Kenny Thomas, Othella...those were good but Dickerson/Cat/Othella turned into important, Dickerson/Othella were part of the trade for Stevie, Stevie and Cat were part of the trade for TMac.
This makes perfect sense. This explains why CD went from Forest Gump to Einstein in the past couple of years - the puppeteer changed.
You mean to have CB to stay with the Rockets for a while, so he can find out and talk about things like, we made a terrible desicion to signing Charlie Ward, or we are paying a lot of maney to Ewing for doing nothing, ... No way.
Folks, Weinhauer was the buffer between the basketball guys and the front office/owner who at that time very much at odds with each other. The then pres of the team was a control jerk out of his element.
Thank you v3.0 - Few remember or agknowledge that Rudy and CD were building a group of complementary players around Hakeem. Looking back that is a large part of problems then. In 1997 - Dream was still an all-star and could even be argued as still the best big man. Resources were spent on Barkley - in '06 -losing us Horry and Cassell. Later we needed a point guard in the worst way and led to signing Brent Price. Not Rudy's fault the guy had 2 ACL injuries. Later aquisition of Pippen was part of building around Dream. I cannot defend some of the signings like Maloney, but draft picks like Cuttino, and Dickerson were adressing a need for a guard. I was one of a minority that thought Langhi would be able to create matchup problems with his size and quickness- like Horry. In summer leagues Langhi moved so well and quickly without the ball he reminded me of Reggie Miller. He did not pan out as we know. Easy to second Guess Rudy now- he was at the Hornets game last nite - and I saw him on TV at the Grizzlies game-scouting. I do not think Steve Patterson deserves all the credit he is getting here. His dad Ray Patterson was a great - very intelligent Baketball exec. Don Cheaney should be getting more recognition for the team that began to excell in '92-93.
Here is my take, FWIW. I think the coaches make the ultimate decisions on player acquisition. Rudy did make some bad ones. But even the worst Rudy critics have to admit that he also did some fantastic ones. And JVG has done great in building this team. But one can argue that he got lucky in inheriting Yao and landing TMac. Having those two guys does wonder to you in terms of getting players. The thing is, when it comes to judging talents, it's a gambling thing. The difference between Rudy and JVG, IMO, is that JVG insists on getting players with good work ethics and commitment to the system, while Rudy just goes for talents. That, I think, is what makes JVG sucessful.
I heard Kenny is going to be doing a few games for the Knicks now??? Disappointing, but since Ive been attending the games I havent been able to hear Clyde yet.
Ah...I guess more fuel for the Anti-Gundy bandwagon...which happens to have like 4 people with another 3 million sitting on the fence.
I know I'm going to get slammed for questioning the Almighty Doctah, but I'm a little dubious about this. Barkley gets close to two million a year for showing up to Atlanta once a week during the regular season, and for 40 nights in the post season. He gets to be on national TV, isn't asked to do much by way of analysis, and gets paid handsomely. The local Rockets affiliate was going to top this gig? Just because Houston is closer to Phoenix than Atlanta is? Turner/Time Inc. is very strict about letting their on-air talent do local work, it's basically Marv with Yes and Stockton/Harlan doing national TV football.
I haven't read the whole thread so maybe I missed it but I thought it was just for one or two games. If so I don't see why that is hard to believe.
