That was by no means a knock on Chase. I have called Chase a defensive liability in the past, but I have come to believe that the Sum of Chase's Offense/Defense is greater than the sum of Ariza's Offense/Defense. And for the record, I don't think Ariza and Battier are redundant. The redundancy stops at the fact that they both play the wing position. Ariza is a quicker defender which gets you more steals. Battier is more of a position defender who gets you contested shots. Battier is a much stronger defender and post player, which allows him to guard 2-4 and even some bigger point guards. Ariza is far less versatile, only being able to guard the wing position. Battier is a superior weak side shot blocker Battier is stronger, and more capable of finishing or drawing contact at the rim Ariza is more of a leaper and would be a better rebounder if he was stronger and didn't shy away from contact on the boards Shane is a more consistent open shooter Ariza has a quicker first step and is much quicker off the dribble, which would matter if he still had control of the ball and his body when he got to his "second step" Shane is a much better passer and ball handler, and is a much smarter basketball player. I know basketball IQ and smarts are cliche' around here, but it means that he more often than Ariza makes the right play or the right pass at the right time and is more aware of everything going on at all times on the court. He can see and read plays better as they unfold on offense and defense. So before I get the Didn't Read LOL Icon..... I say: Brooks/Lowry Chase/Brooks Battier/Ariza Scola/Landry Hayes/Anderson Should be our very tight rotation
Actuall JVG mentioned this in the latest game that he did commentary. To paraphrase, he said that Ariza was a good fit in LA but for some reason he is not in Houston. There could be a myriad reasons for this but the one I notice most is his attitude. He seems to have some sense of entitlement and the coach has not reined him in, so far. CBud has great talent and skill but he has to start asserting himself more. He should start playing to score all the time on offense and not look for the pass first. His court awareness and passing skills are superior so he can always make the pass at the end of his self initiated play. I have noticed that when he makes a positive move to score a team mate always receives a pass from him in scoring position.
you know, I was reading all the previous posts, and I was wondering, is anyone who is defending Ariza actually watching the games??? He sucks. Period. I cant remember a player as bad as him. He cant dribble, he cant shoot, he isnt really that great of a defender, and he is a turnover machine. I have to agree with DD on this one. Chase should have been starting a month ago. I bet the rockets would have a few more wins if chase had ariza's min and vice versa.
I only read the first two pages and then decided to cut to the chase. I noticed that you didn't say which position to start Chase at, DD, so I'll put in my 2 cents. Yes, Coach A should make a big change and start Air Bud. He should start Chase at the 2 and move Ariza, since we have him, to the 3, his natural position. Bring Battier off the bench for Ariza, much like we sub Landry for Scola. Neither Trevor or Shane produce much offense, so it's a wash there, Ariza has his shots reduced by playing fewer minutes, and Chase has a chance to put some points on the board. Battier can sub for Chase if his defense is needed against the opposing 2 and Ariza is having one of his rare games when he actually scores points. It might make a difference, much like starting Scola, finally, got the team moving in the right direction.
Anyone with eyes can see that it's high time to start Chase. Trevor just doesn't have what it takes to be on our starting lineup. He would be great with Lowry/Landry making opportunities for him in transition.
Brooks chase ariza scola chuck I think if we move ariza back to sf which seems to be his natural position he will play better. And chase can score at will.
Thanks. but i see your point in calling them redundant. I just wouldn't use those words. i would say that they would both be better complimented by a legit shooting guard who can score. Just like Landry and Scola would both be better complimented by Yao.
I'm going to start wearing black and carrying around a napalm grenade! Seriously, I appreciate the compliment from the guy, although I don't think I said anything that hasn't been said before, in one form or another.
I think in the current situation that's a non-starter. If anyone sits, it will be Shane, in my opinion. I don't think he'll play much in the way of fewer minutes, but I think Trevor would.
I think it is pathetic that we have to worry about Ariza's ego when considering whether or not to start him. He has the worst shooting percentage in the NBA, if that is not enough to get his ass on the bench, I don't know what it.
I think Battier is a better 3 than Ariza. Plus, what will moving Ariza to his natural position accomplish? He will still be open on the arc, and still miss. He has ZERO post up game, which most competent 3's in the league do. I don't see much more we could do to help his shot other than telling the other 9 players on the court to sit down when he catches the ball. i think he would still miss. It's in his head. It's like Brad Lidge or Chris Brown (Texans Kicker)
When you throw away the box score and actually watch the game... Heck you can even DVR it.... Shane and Trevor are equal in offensive production, but Shane has 1000X the efficiency and is less painful to watch. These are the facts, and they are undisputed. When Trevor shoots the three, i make the exact same face I would make if Chuck Hayes was shooting a three.
You have to worry about everyone's ego - as fans, it's easy for us to dismiss these things, but they're huge. If at your workplace promotions and demotions happened too frequently, you'd have a lot of disgruntled folks. It's important to be certain before you move forward. If I were Adelman, right now I'd maintain the starting roles, but shave some time off of Ariza and Shane and give more minutes to Chase. Look for favorable matchups game-to-game. Tweak Ariza's responsibilities on the court to - he's a valuable glue guy and active, just turn off his light to bomb away 3s. Get his confidence back with easier inside shots for the time being. Chase is a rookie, there's no pressure to start him. If Shane comes into the office and asks to give up his spot, okay. But there's no need to risk Trevor shutting down and losing confidence when you can just increase Chase's role off the bench, a la Landry.
Listen, chump, not only do I watch the games, I record them on 2 DVRs. If you actually read my post, it might help. emjohn put the situation well, although we disagree about the starting gig.
