ariza type players excel with a guy that demands double teams...he is just not that good at creating his own shot or for others. if rockets would start chase bud. i would want ariza to come off the bench. shane battier is the heart of this current rockets team.
Chase is pretty much a clone of Ariza on offense, except Chase is a much more consistent shooter (despite the FG%). Chase is a slightly better ball handler too although in his role off the bench he hasn't been asked to take more than 5 dribbles lol.
It's not about who's starting it's about the scorer role he thinks he has to perform in. Battier knows his limitation but apparantly Ariza hasn't figured it out yet or doesn't want to. He needs his minutes reduced and needs to understand that if his shot isn't falling he should take it hard to the rim and try to get an easier shot or create fror better shooters on the perimeter, don't just keep jacking up shot after shot...last night was depressing.
On offense, he is like the illegitmate Barry brother that Jon And Brent didn't know about. He's a facilitator.
C-Bud has rookie written on him which equals "inconsistent." Remember how long Brooks struggled to get in a grove, and still does on occasion, but once he got regular minutes he started to improve? C-Bud appears to have more potential than Ariza, who has "bench player" written all over him. I don't think Adelman will sit Ariza and start C-Bud, but I except distribution of minutes may change.
I don't think Chase's defense is an issue at all. Certainly he is still growing in that area but I just rarely see him out of defensive position. As smart as he is and as high as his BBIQ is I think he could become an elite defender. I'm sure some would flame me for making that statement but I really believe it. I'm starting to see Chase emulate Battier on defense and Chase has more athleticism than Shane. Chase is just such a cerebral player that he is almost always in the position on the court that he is supposed to be in on both sides of the court. One of the reasons I'm starting to lean more and more towards wanting an Iggy to Houston trade is because of a Iggy / Chase combo at the 2 and 3 positions. No offensive or defensive weaknesses in that area in my opinion.
If Ariza and Budinger arrived at the Rockets gym for tryouts and noone had any knowledge of who these guys were, then Chase would've started from day 1. Unfortunately Ariza has a ring and he was told this would be "his" year. Promises were made that he could get more shots and this is what we get. We're halfway through the season and theres no sign of Ariza turning into this all-star break out player. His handles are worse than Luther Head's and his shot is worse than Alston's. Does Adelman have the guts to limit Ariza on the floor?
I think this is why Chase will never be a superstar. Chase IMO WILL be an all star. He will be a great player but will never ascend to superstar status because his personality is more like Shane's than Kobe's. Not that it's a bad thing but there are times in a game where you would like your best player to say "give me the damn ball and get out of my way". I think a player has to have a certain amount of selfishness to them to do that or at least an EGO that is so big that they truley believe they are their teams absolute best chance to win down the stretch. Dream had that, Kobe has it, Shaq had it, Bird had it etc... I don't know that Chase his it, he is much more humble on the court than any of those.
Starting is one thing but Ariza plays huge minutes every night. I'm sure there's some reason this is the case. There are star player who play less than he does. But, the easiest answer as to why Battier/Ariza continue to start is that Morey and Adelman know a trade will happen before the deadline. There is a decent chance one of them will be involved. Why mess with the players' heads by yanking them from the starting lineup when (if one of the two is traded) they will likely start in the event we obtain a more offensively talented wing?
Have you been watching games in a Bizarro universe or something? Chase a clone of Ariza on offense? What? Sorry dude but there is not even a comparison there. Chase does not cause turn over after turn over because of his indecisiveness about what he is going to do with the ball in his hands. Chase is rarely out of position when he is on the court. Chase actually knows when to take the ball to the basket, when to shoot and when to pass. Trevor has not even figured out the damn ball is round yet.
Since this thread is about Chase starting I thought we should toss this little stat in. I know it's only one game but here are Chase's stats as a starter this season. PPG 16 AST 5 REB 12 FG% 54.5 FT% 100 We won the game 107 to 96 against Detroit. Not bad at all.
I'm just talking about skillsets. Both are average ball handlers and can't create offense consistently off the dribble. Both are best at shooting stand still. However, like I said, Chase is a much better shooter and is definitely smarter with the ball. But its the fact that Chase plays WITHING himself (ie to his strengths like running the floor like a deer and shooting) that makes him a much more efficient player. He is also a better finisher too. Trevor just does too much out of his skillset , and maybe thats a out of necessity sometimes because we do pay him relatively a lot more than he warrants and because he essentially has to replace Ron Artest. And yes I have been watching. I've watched Chase play the 3 years + half now including his time in Arizona And I've seen enough of Ariza now to make a judgement about his (lack) of offensive game.
i'm really surprised that no one in the media is talking about what a hindrance ariza is to the team. even bill and bull continue to refer to his poor play as a slump. obviously the guy can play above what he's doing now because he was pretty consistent last season. but at some point, the coaching staff has got to come to the realization that this guy does not have it mentally. i figured somebody with the chron would have dogged him by now. where's fran when you need him?
Trevor is playing like a D-league player now I remember RA said something like he would go with the play who are performing at a high level, then what's the matter with trevor, this dude gets a pass while performing like ****? This guy can't perform any worse....
I would start Shane with Cbud, let Trevor come off the bench. I thought RA said he would start the best talent but it's clear he is not willing to do so with Trevor. I don't know why but he needs to start being a man and play the players that will win us games. Trevor could perhaps start with Yao, but not with our current squad.
He can't do that either, because he can't finish very well, can't dribble and can't provide spacing because he can't shoot the 3ball. He is one big old can of can't. DD
You think Chase can? I'd take my chances with Shane on him. Kobe is like Jordan-lite. Nobody can hold him when he doesn't want to be held.
TOTALLY agree. Also, he isn't that great of a defender. He is better than average and he gets lucky a lot on the reaching and jumping into the passing lane. Just like Artest, he gets beat a lot when he gambles. People don't remember that. They only remember the 2 breakaway dunks during the game. they don't remember him getting beat after jumping in the passing lane, someone having to rotate off his man, then we give up a 3 two passes later....
